Renee, According to James Welch's annotated 1860 Clay County Census, in HH#3 was slave owner Barton POTTER. Potter had the following slaves: (age/sex/color) B-black, M-mulatto: 50 FB, 40 FB, 35 MM, 40 FB, 30 MM, 30 MM, 30 MM, 23 FB, 17 FB, 15 FB, 5 FB, 3 FB, 2MM, 10/12 MM. This slave owner could be the source of your POTTER family name. RESPONSE: Kentucky did not begin a procedure to record births, deaths until 1911. Even then and for several years later, it still was not a perfect system. Records prior to 1911 are sparce. There are some births for various counties which can be read from microfilm from reels sold by the State of KY. In some counties, birth records, death records and some marriage records have been transcribed and sold in book format as Vital Stats Books.
