I am researching the Hughes family that lived in Muhlenberg Co., died in
Ballard Co. - primarily William, b. abt. 1760, d. Spencer Co. m.
Mildred Bland and his son, Jesse, b. abt. 1785, d. in Ballard Co. m.

Does anyone know who the children of Jesse and Sarah were? I have only

Hi Everyone,
These names were given to me years ago to seek for possible relationships.
I just found the note when cleaning a file cabinet (I know, I should be
ashamed of myself!!).
Anyway, I wondered if anyone on this list is familiar with any of them or
know if they are living or deceased.
Any helpful comment will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Barbara

I hope your holiday has been pleasant thusfar. Rather than posting data
today, I am going to send out another in the "Tips" series.
Over the 21 months that the JP List has been on-line, I have been asked a
number of times about what sorts of general reference materials might be
useful for a genealogist to own. I am also asked about more specific items
pertaining to the Jackson Purchase region.
In the area of general reference works that would be useful to any
genealogist, whether novice, e

This is just a quick note to let you know that I will not be posting that
Skills Puzzler tonight. I have just returned from St.Louis, after the usual
delays(no air conditioning in aircraft, gate blocked, and on and on), and I
will not be doing anything further on the computer tonight.
For those of you with requests pending, I will get those filled over the
weekend, and the Skills Puzzler will be posted tomorrow.
Until then...........

Hi, everyone and Ann too, the idea of a Marrying Tree is intriguing, my
grandparents were married beneath a huge tree in the old town of Columbus,
KY in Hickman co. It seems that the tree was important, does anyone know
how this tradition got started? Donna

Tonight, we will be resuming data posts with another installment in our
series on Early Calloway County Marriages - one of our most popular series.
In the prior 30 posts in this series, we have moved forward from 1823 to
1839. We will finish the year 1839 in this post, and begin the year 1820.
If you see a marriage which interests you, and you would like to have the
full dataset for that marriage(which usually includes the dates of license
and marriage, who performed the ceremony and the cons

As I spend my last evening in the city of St.Louis before returning home
tomorrow, I am going to bring to you a short piece of history about
Calloway County's first jail. This is taken from "History of Calloway
County - 1931", a retrospective put together by the Murray Ledger & Times
newspaper. From time to time, I'll bring other narratives to you from this
publication.
Tomorrow, we will close out the week with another in the Skills Puzzler
series.

The 1850 Calloway Co., KY Census has
E.W. Lewis b. 1822 N.C.
N. (female) b. 1832
L.E.J. (male) b. 1849-50
Does anyone know the names that go with these initials?
I am looking for Ellis Lewis who died in April 1862 in the JP area.
Thanks,
Barbara

I have been interested in the discussions on the "marrying tree", since I
have been told both my grandparents and great-grandparents were married
there. It was supposed to have been a popular place for young couples who
were "eloping" because the legal age to marry without parental consent was
lower in Tennessee than in Kentucky. Perhaps someone can confirm that. My
mother told me in the old days couples were married in their buggies or
wagons under the "marrying tree", and she remembered seeing her pa

Hello folks,
"Kirkin' of the Tartans" was celebrated at First Presbyterian Church

Several visitors to Paducah were present and we were glad for their

This was an experience that will not be forgotten ... quite a special

Today we will resume our review of early Calloway County marriages. In the
past 31 segments of this series, we have worked our way from 1823 to 1840,

Today, and over the next few days, I am going to be presenting some "bits
and pieces" from my miscellaneous file on Graves County. We had a Skills
Puzzler recently about clues in old newspapers, and that reminded me that I
have some items taken from the area newspapers around Graves, Calloway and
McCracken counties.
Today and tomorrow, I will list some names that appear in these various
pieces of miscellany. If one of your kin appears in the list, and you want
an abstract of the newspaper con
