12. Re: [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Early Calloway Co. Marriages [1]
Hi, everyone and Ann too, the idea of a Marrying Tree is intriguing, my grandparents were married beneath a huge tree in the old town of Columbus, KY in Hickman co. It seems that the tree was important, does anyone know how this tradition got started? Donna On Thu, 23 Sep 1999, Ann Watson wrote: > Supposedly there was an Old Marrying Tree in Henry County, KY. 17. Re: [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Old Chestnut Tree [1]
I have been interested in the discussions on the "marrying tree", since I have been told both my grandparents and great-grandparents were married there. It was supposed to have been a popular place for young couples who were "eloping" because the legal age to marry without parental consent was lower in Tennessee than in Kentucky. Perhaps someone can confirm that. My mother told me in the old days couples were married in their buggies or wagons under the "marrying tree", and she remembered seeing her pa

My friends - Today, and over the next few days, I am going to be presenting some "bits and pieces" from my miscellaneous file on Graves County.
