1. [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] First Christmas Tree celebrated in Canada. [1]
Hello to all my friends and to the subscribers of this list, I have told this story before, but it is worth repeating every year to show that the spirit of Christmas has been with us for centuries, and will endure forever. This being the last week before Holy Night, I would like to tell you once more about the first lighted Christmas tree in Canada. It happened on Christmas Eve 1781 in Sorel, Quebec, at the residence of the Brunswick General Baron von Riedesel, commander of the Hessian and Brunswick tr
2. Re: [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] Immigrants from Reust, Paitzdorf and area (Thuringia) [1]
Hello, John Merz. Interesting query about your ancestor emigrating to Louisiana in 1839. I think my Opdenweyers came about that time. They were from the Rhineland, however. But they may have been living in Alsace or Lorraine, I just don't know. All I know is they came in about 1838 or 1839, judging from what was said on Joachim Opdenweyer's Declaration of Intent, which he filed in St. Louis. It's possible he went from New Orleans to St. Louis, then back to New Orleans where he received his citizenship paper

No, sorry, I have no Waltmann, but my whole list of Waldeckers who remained in LA can be found in the mail list archives of this List. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roberta Madden" To: "John H.Merz" Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2001 11:16 PM Subject: Re: [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] WALDECK Soldiers in LA. I am not sure if I have asked you about my family or not. Do you have an index showing the name WALTMAN? Please look for David, Daniel or Phillip. Than

Interesting query about your ancestor emigrating to Louisiana in 1839. =Sorry, not my ancestor, but a friend's ancestor, as clearly stated= So where is Reust, Paitzdorf and Thuringia compared to the Rhineland? =Rhineland in Germany is commonly known as the area through which the river Rhein flows, Thuringia is a State of Germany (in German - Thueringen) to find your way around, I would
5. [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] Gearhart Family [1]
I am looking for the descendants of or information concerning the GEARHART families who settled in the area where Indiana, Jefferson and Armstrong Counties in Pennsylvania USA come together. I am especially interested in ADAM GEARHART (Geerhart) who is recorded in the 1830 Census in Mahoning (Mahonigh) Twp., Indiana County, Pennsylvania and NEHEMIAH GEARHART, who came from Alsace before the revolution. My ancestors were: GEORGE GEARHART, b. abt. 1820, m. CATHERINE WHITESELL GEARHART, b. July 29, 1817, d.
6. [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] Re: German Listing [1]
Hello Amber, back in Spring I published a list of Waldeck soldiers who went missing during the American Revolution between Pensacola and New Orleans. The name Johannes Wagener was on the list. Could you check out the list archives and perhaps tell us if you think that could be him and give us some more data? 7. [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] Emigranten/Immigrants aus der Gegend von Reust. [1]
HESSENLAND-L: Re: [HESSENLAND] Emigranten aus der Gegend von ReustHello LA-FRENCH-GERMAN subscribers, Here is a beautiful demonstration how co-operation between subscribers of one mail list and those of others bring excellent results. You do remember the query earlier this month about those 125 people leaving Germany, bound for New Orleans - here came a direct reply to my German-speaking list which made someone very happy. I'll bring it with some translations were neccessary. This being the last day of th
8. [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] Immigrants from Reust, Paitzdorf and area (Thuringia) [1]
Hello subscribers of the LA-French-German rootsweb list; I don't have to introduce myself to you again, but you do know that I am a regular contributor to this list. However, today I have a special Christmas wish - a friend of mine in Germany wrote to me asking for help in his search for a group of 125 people from his area who left there on 14.Sep. 1839, and arrived in New Orleans in Dec.1839. With this group was one by the name of Johann Michael Schuessler, probably the brother of his ancestor. He does n
9. Re: [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] offering to do look ups at the library [1]
Hi Jo Ann, why don't you tell us a bit more about those two, you must have a reason to ask for them. I personally would like to hear about Johannes Klos, what do you know about him? Cheers, John Merz ----- Original Message ----- From: Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2001 5:33 PM My ancestors from Germany to Louisiana are John D. Suhren and Johannes Klos. Am I too late? I think they came about the mid 1800's. Thanks. Jo Ann

11. [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] Surname BRALEY [1]
I've been searching for information on Mechie Frederick Braley for many years. His existence before 1836 is a family mystery. According to his application for citizenship (found in the LA State Archives), he was a native of Wurtemberg, and was born in the year 1810. He stated that he had arrived in the US at NY in May, 1832, and settled in Louisiana in 1836 where he remained for the rest of his life. Final citizenship papers have not been found, so it is assumed that he didn't follow through. A se

13. Re: [LA-FRENCH-GERMAN] offering to do look ups at the library [1]
These two gentlemen are my grandfathers on my mothers side. John D. Suhren, my great grandfather, was born in 1831 in Germany. Somewhere I got the information he came to the US about 1840, so he must have come with his parents, I think, also named Johann Suhren. He married Wilhelmina Lurssen, also born in Germany, 1825, and was adopted as a child by a Jewish family. I know nothing of any siblings. Johannes Klos, my great great grandfather was born about1813 (not positive of this date) in Germany, m
