It's amazing what information can be found in these files, and it varies from person to person.
We received the military records for our family member and it has over 200 pages in it, well worth the cost. Many of them are handwritten by our family members and are treasured.

Allowing for misspelling on census records-- In the 1870 census there's a
Killis G. Napper, age 25, with wife Laura, age 25, with child Mary E., age
1, living in Union Parish, Ward 5, Post Office of Downsville. Killis and
his Laura are living next door to Lawrence Kelly, age 45. The only other
person in the Kelly household is Ellen, age 20, listed as house
