3. Windsor View [1]
Hi List, Is there anyone in Liverpool who lives near to Windsor View? I discovered that my grandmother, Annie SHAW was born at number 18, and her father, Peter SHAW had been brought up there (according to 1881 census). I couldn't believe it when I found that it is still on the Liverpool map. Dare I hope that number 18 is still there? I would love someone who lives nearby to have a look for me, and let me know. Happy New Year to everyone Regards Mo Mortlock.
4. Re: [LAN] 1881 census [1]
Jackie, I have the 1881 Census Cds and I couldn't find your Marion Beaton in the Barrow area, or anywhere else in Lancashire. Try to come up with a bit more or different information. Of course, they may just not have been recorded in the Census. If I can be of any further help, give me a yell. Michael.
5. [LAN] HODGSON 1841 census lookup [1]
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL My first posting for the year. Armed with new information I would be very grateful if someone could help me knock down my brick wall. Could someone please check the 1841 census of Warton near Lancaster also know as Warton with Lindeth or Warton near Carnforth for the following entry (my great great grandfather)? (not to be confused with the Warton near Lytham Saint Annes) Thomas HODGSON & Jane HODGSON (nee FRANCE) & any & all children that might be living with them at the time. Fo

7. [LAN] Preston 1851/1861 Census Indexes [1]
Have a BIG favour to ask of someone. On my last trip to Preston I went to the Lancashire Records Office and looked up much useful information (well worth a trip if anyone reading this hasn't been!). In searching for my MARSDEN lot, I looked through 1891 and 1871 Census Indexes, got the relevant fiche/film, and found the entries fairly quickly. Rather Stupidly, I didn't copy down the references for the 1861 and 1851 Censuses, ran out of time I guess. So, if any REALLY KIND SOUL is going to be at the Lanc
8. Re: [LAN] DISLEY DBY(Cheshire) [1]
Hi Pauline, Not a terribly informed reply but a couple of points maybe of interest. While searching for my ancestor's births in the GRO indexes I was a little surprised to find that HAYFIELD (Derbyshire) was the register office for that area, in the 1870's certainly, and presumably before. This was a surprise because Disley is now probably larger than Hayfield, both still called villages, and about 5 or 6 miles away from each other, with New Mills, which is a small, ex-industrial town, in between. Disley
9. [LAN] Re:1881 lookup please [1]
I sent this message on 25th Dec but it didn't arrive:----- Hello John. I have very little additional info except she had two sisters, one called Edith and the other Ethel both born around the turn of the century. Bertha was considerably older than the other two. I think that the other two have been looked for in the past also without success but perhaps not under the name of WORMOLD. I can't remember for sure. Back to the drawing board I think. Thanks for your interest. Bob in Brisbane, Australia ollier@gil
10. Re: [LAN] Marriage by Banns [1]
Hi Julie, It is unlikely that there is any document concerning the marriage on which the parents' names are given. There might be a relative as a witness to the marriage but that's all. Even when one or both were under the age of consent it would simply state "with parental consent" or words to that effect. I have found that, often, the only way to establish the parents' identities is by a process of analysing the names of the offspring and using the "naming" method to arrive at a probable name for the par

20. [LAN] NON-GEN: Ginnels and giggle-gaggles [1]
Hi all There has been a debate going on on the Yorksgen site for the last few days about pronounciation of the word 'ginnel', as in those narrow, cobbled alleyways between buildings. Seems some of the White Rose brethren pronoune it 'jennel', with a soft G, mainly people from around the Sheffield area. That isn't the point of my message. I joined the debate, pointing out that the hard G pronounciation is how we call them in the Ashton/Dukinfield/Stalybridge/Hyde area, but that they are also known as 'giggl

22. [LAN] NON GEN - for Australians [1]
Hello, I am an American and I have a friend who would like to move to Australia with her husband and young son. I've seen lots of Australians on the list and I was wondering if anyone knows how easy it is for Americans to get in the country and if there are jobs available for teachers. I believe that the area she is interested in is New South Wales. Kim USA
23. Re: [LAN] Credit Cards [1]
RE: Credit Cards and the Net I got a new card that I plan to use just for genealogy and if the day ever comes, to use on the internet. I got the one with the lowest limit - which is far more than what I think I need. (The banks all want everyone to have such high limits today) I didn't want to use my "everyday" cards because I am afraid of what Karin is going through or worse. By having a separate card for genealogy and internet, I hope to scare myself into realizing how much this addiction is costing

I have seen records that say Catholic but am not sure. I am of particular interested to know if a cemetery exist next to this church. Thanks in advance Bo Mosley
