My turn to pay back for the wonderful help I have received from people on this list. 5. [LAN] printer: HASLAM [0.970962]
One of my ancestors and his son, both with the name John HASLAM, were printers in the Bolton and Salford areas. Can anyone see them in any of the business directories for that era? At one time one of them supposedly worked at one of the local newspapers, as a printer compositor. This was around the 1870/1880's in the Salford area. Can anyone give me the names of likely local newspapers and how I might go about contacting or searching them? Thanks, Mark (Sydney)
6. [LAN] what age did Grandma concieve. [0.970962]
Hello Can I first off apologise for those of you who receive this message more than once, because of the nature of my request I have used more than one list. I am attempting to sit university papers at a more than mature age, (trying to catch up with my children and grandchildren). One of these papers deals with the industrial and agricultural revolution in Europe in general, and Britain in particular. A part of the knowledge that I am seeking to absorb is based on the ages, which people married, conceive
7. [LAN] Civil Wars [0.970962]
Confusion is now solved. I am informed that the United States (or, at the time , somewhat Disunited States) had a conflict that they call "The Civil War" in the 1860s. However, LANCSGEN is a mailing list concerned with family history in Lancashire not in Lancaster County, Virginia. Here The Civil War (actually in two episodes) concerned Parliament, Cromwell, chopping off the King's head and so on. It occurred around the 1640s. There were other civil wars but they generally go by other names, Wars of th

I know that 1955 is not exactly genealogical material, but I do have the full passenger list for the Southern Cross for that year - NZ and OZ. Note 1955 (NOT 1855). If anyone wants to know if a rellie was on board I'd be happy to check. 9. Re: [LAN] Bolton and Ansdell [0.970962]
Hi Joyce, I have the baptism registers of Coppull from 1757 to 1904. There is no listing for Johnathon Bolton. I then thought he may have been baptised at Standish St Wilfrid. Their baptisms are on the British VRI, I have searched that and he is not there. Do you have him on any census showing an age and place of birth? Do you know his religion? If he was Catholic he could have been baptised at St Gregory's Weld Bank, I only have their registers from 1850 (there was a Bolton bapt there in 1851). He may eve
10. PRESCOTT, Wigan Rugby League [0.970962]
My late father John Harrison PRESCOTT told me that his father, also named John harrison PRESCOTT, played as fly half for Wigan Football Club, the original name of Wigan Warriors Rugby League side. In addition my father's great granfather, also named John Harrison PRESCOTT, was an important board member of the club. The club used to play at PRESCOTT STREET cricket ground before moving for one season to Springfield Park and then to Central Park. I have discovered that the last named John Harrison PRESCOTT in
11. [LAN] Dowd/ Martin family [0.970962]
hello Everyone! I am new to the list and to researchi9ng English ancestors. I am searching my husband's family. Michael DOWD and Ann MARTIN lived, I believe, in Earlestown having come from Ireland. Their eldest child, William was born in Earlestown in about 1878. There was a daughter, Mary, born in 1880. Agnes was born in about 1883/4, Jack, birth unknown and Rebecca, born about 1899/1900. I presume there were other children in between. At the time of the 1881 census, Michael was 29, a coal miner, living a

14. [LAN] 1861: All Saints Street Bolton [0.970962]
I was unable to find All Saints Street in Bolton in the street index for District 468 in the 1861 census when I looked for it at the FRC today. I wonder if anyone on this list has had better luck, or more skill? I am looking for the family of John Entwistle, a publican or innkeeper, who were at number 50 All Saints Street in 1851 and at number 34 in 1865. I should be very grateful if anyone on the list is able to help. Stephen

17. RE: [LAN] Re: Cousins [0.970962]
So that person's great grandmother is also your mother or father's great grandmother. That person is therefore your mother or father's 2nd cousin (one 'great' so adding 1 gives 2nd cousin) and hence your second cousin once removed. Just to say hello and let you know that BBC Radio 4 programme 'Making History' is including an item on Tuesday 2nd April at 3pm about The History of the Grand National at Aintree and Captain Martin BECHER of Bechers Brook infamy. If anyone knows anything about Captain BECHER's parents, and his Mother in particular I would be very pleased to have any information.
