I believe that there is a New Orleans Picayune printed index that may go
back that far and there is a section for obituaries. I will reciprocate and
look that up for you.
The New Orleans Public Lib rary also indexed onto 3 x 5 card obituaries of
the various city newspapers from earliest times. The New orleans Public
Library has a project to put these obituary indexes online. Don't know the
status of same. Maybe someone else could comment on the progress of the
obits. index at N.O. Public being pl

Hi everybody:
I figure you are the group I need for this information.
We have had a request from a client to visit a tomb in St. Louis #2 during their program in New Orleans next year.
The name of the deceased is Andrew Caillou he was a black hero of the Civil War. Our client gave us the name as Caillox. We were directed to the New Orleans collection. The lady who works for me spoke to a Pamela Arceneax, who was very snippy and not much help. I am assuming the name is Caillou no lox.

Hi Gang,
The complete 1842 New Orleans City Directory is now online!
This has been a "secret" project for this for a long time. I started
transcribing the directory in March of last year. When we started the index
project, I had to slow down, but I kept limping along as fast as I could.
Jan Worthen, Cheramie and Frankie all pitched in on some of the sections.
Finally, a couple of months ago, Louis Lavedan volunteered to finish the last
remaining sections, since I was really busy with the indexes.
It will be a long time before the obit index at the New Orleans Public
Library is completely online. I was researching there last weekend and the
woman working on it asked if she could interrupt me to put some cards she'd
finished with back in the drawer and take some others. I think I was
researching the name Benjamin at the time...so that gives you an idea of
where they are on the project...somewhere in the early B's. And she tells
me that she is working part time on this project.

My grandmother was born there! The business her parents owned was mentioned!
All this time I have been spelling the town incorrectly and so now I
understand why I couldn't find anything about it.
Thanks!

Came across this today and thought I'd pass it along. It allows you to
search by parish for a current listing of cemeteries in that parish, along
with address and phone numbers on some.

Yes, I think so too.
I have to keep referring to the passenger list that I found my family on,
coming from Sicily to NOLA. On that list, the women and men are separated,
meaning that they are "berthed" separately. The Gebbia, Palisi, Gendusa,
Giglio women are next to each other on that list, which means that they
were travelling together, and more than likely knew each other. Hmmm. I
hope I'm not running into a can of worms and skeletons.

BTW, after looking at the 1880 map, Peggy is correct -- Ward 10 would
include the Garden District's Jackson Avenue ...

Hi Bertrand,
Well, sorry to tell you this, but the marriage bond is not an indication of
wealth. It was pretty much standard for everyone who wanted to get married.
Even some of my relatives who were dirt poor had to sign in. :-(
As far as the Opdenqeyer wealth, it is possible that there are bank records
that still survive today from that era? I am wondering if some of the banks
that were in NO at that time are still existant today. Maybe the key here is
to follow the money, just as you have sug

Hi Betty,
I think that if necessary, the names would have to be spelled. There are
some names that are obvious, like Green or Smith. But knowing New Orleans
history, I think there is going to be some spelling to do.
Colleen
Hey Nova,
Just wanted to let you know that 263 new obits have been uploaded and put on
the TOC today.
Also I have moved some of the surnames to their own page under the obit
indexes. The names are Buras, Martin, Meyer and Hingle.
I have plenty more obits to upload but will not get to those until tomorrow.
Hope everyone has a Happy New Year.
