5. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] San Diego Area [1]
Hi Jan, Your Joseph Rinehart also had a Social Security No. 547-16-0045, per the California death index. As for his Navy records there is an address that you can write to that will provide you with additional information on him especially since you now have his full date of birth and Social Security number. I dont have the address here with me at this office, but I can get for you tomorrow when I am at my other office. For an obituary in 1942, you will probably need to know what city in Los Angeles Coun

10. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] Emigration From Alsace [1]
Hi NOVA, Some of my own ancestors came form Alsace. I have found that in spite of all the wars and political upheavals in that area of the world, the records are remarkablem, going back sometimes to the 1300s. My grandmother found a marriage contract in an iron box in her closet when she finally moved after being in the same house for forty years. The box had not been open since the depression, and belonged to her grandmother, Rose Ulmer. The marriage contract was for Rose's parents, Joseph Ulmer
11. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] Obits [1]
Well, I can sure understand your thinking...I was really surprised at the TP's obit policy. I would have thought the ones without the photos would be free and the ones with the photos were extra. Sure doesn't make much sense to me. >^,,^< >^,,^< >^,,^< *Ellen* http://home.earthlink.net/~ellencleary/
12. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] 19th c. political group [1]
I have to chime in on this. Yes, there are jungles in Africa, no the vast majority of slaves in Louisiana did not come from regions anywhere near those jungles. Gwendolyn Midlo Hall, in Africans in Colonial Louisiana has clearly proven that the vast majority of slaves were Wolof and Bambara from modern Senagal and Mali. Many facets of their culture became parts of the Creole culture of Lousiana influencing the arts, ,music, and language of New Orleans. The reality of the White League is that they struc

14. [LAORLEAN-L] Re: 19th Century [1]
I suppose this subject is too sensitive to continue, however, I thought the exchanges were pretty moderate, given the fact that a lot of bad stuff went down in the 19th century and that most of our ancestors were involved to some extent. This list is one of the most polite, sensitive and considerate groups I have had the pleasure to subscribe to, and I can't remember having ever seen a flame war here. Regarding our ancestors' involvement and the judgements we are tempted to make, I immediately think of my

16. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] Obits in newspapers [1]
Marie, In my great-grandmother's Succession in New Orleans in 1907, a fee of $9 for "Funeral Notices 5 Papers" was included from a list of expenses from P. J. Donegan, Funeral Director and Embalmer, 510 Felicity Street. There was also a fee of 50 cents for "Recording death certificate." Now I have a question for you. Being new at computers, if I click on "Reply to all," will this just be to the LAORLEAN-L list, rather than to everyone in my address book? Thanks, Janet ----- Original Message ----- Fro

19. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] What was the Sumter Regiment? [1]
Hello all. Here is a story I wrote on my great-grandfather's experience as a member of the 30th Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War: My great-grandfather. Otto M. Opdenweyer served in Company F, 30th Louisiana Infantry, organized in New Orleans on Dec. 17, 1861. Otto didn't join up until March 11, 1862, when the battalion was mustered into 90 days service in New Orleans. It was called the Sumter Infantry. Otto was in a few battles until his capture during the battle of Nashville, TN, in December 1864.

22. [LAORLEAN-L] Marriage/Obit's [1]
Greetings, Not being able to travel to research I contacted Wayne Everard, Archivist concerning the marriage and any obit's for my half-brother and his wife. Mr. Everard informed me they do not have a master index to marriage records for the time period I requested. The records are at the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge through about 1950 and at the State Vital Records Office in New Orleans thereafter. My half-brother B G (Benjamin Graham) PRINE called "Benny" was born 16 Oct 1926 Houston, Harri
23. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] New Orleans Genesis [1]
New Orleans Genesis is the quarterly journal of the Genealogical and Historical Society of New Orleans. The project of indexing the titles of the articles that appear in Genesis is waiting to be discussed at the next board meeting of the Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans. They don't have regularly scheduled board meetings...and the date of the next one seems to be kinda ambiguous at the moment...but the project is proceeding...in a typical New Orleans fashion. >^,,^< >^,,^< >^,,^< *Ellen*
24. Re: [LAORLEAN-L] Naturalized Citizens??? [1]
My father-in-law was from Liverpool, Ireland and I have duplicate original certificate of citizenship. He was naturalized by the Civil District Court, Parish of Orleans, Louisiana on March 31, 1902. It states his sex, age, color, complexion, color of eyes, color of hair, height, weight, marital status, former nationality British AND his picture and signature. I would say that is some valuable information. Merle Ann
