1. Re: [LUTH-ROOTS] records [1]
Not sure about Fond du Lac County, but my experience in Manitowoc (Lutheran, Wisconsin Synod) and Sheboygan (Evangelical Reformed to UCC) have been that each church has it's own records, from which I have been able to get the pastors wife to extract what I needed.....for a nominal fee to cover time, expenses, etc. From what I understand from a fellow genealogist that also did research in Manitowoc (same church) from an early pastor.....the results were "closed door, don't bother me again." Also fro

A book you might try to find is "A Basic history of Lutheranism in America" by Abdel Ross Wentz, copyrighted in 1955 by Muhlenberg Press. The LOC # 55-7765. During the frontier days of Ohio Lutherans usually gathered at someones cabin to hold worship services and did not always have a minister. This book describes this. rfs in omaha , ne On Sun, 29 Jun 2003 19:18:05 EDT JHEARD158@aol.com writes: >I want to do some research on the history of the Lutheran Church in >Ohio. >Could someone suggest some goo

Hi Folks: Concordia Historical Institute is an agency of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The St. Matthew's that is being asked about is Evangelical, probably later Ev. and Reformed and now United Church of Christ. I don't think that Concordia would be a repository for those records. I found some of my family's records with Concord Historical Institute in St. Louis Missouri. They research their records and will send them to you. You pay an hourly rate. I also was researching old fragile records from the late 1800's of our German ancestors in Chicago. Their email address is reference@chi.lcms.org and they will send you the price etc. you need and also if they have the church records you are requesting. Anymore questions write me and I will try to answer. Jackie in Texas. ----- Ori

If this is the St. Matthews that you are researching, it definitely is LCMS, and records would be archived at CHI in St. Louis: Saint Matthew Lutheran Church 2108 W 21st St Chicago, IL 60608-2608 Lila White

I want to do some research on the history of the Lutheran Church in Ohio. Could someone suggest some good sources? All I've been able to find is history of individual churches. Also, do you think an article/book on this subject would be of interest? Thanks!

17. [LUTH-ROOTS] Seminary Info. [1]
Hi List, Does anyone know the actual process a theology student would have gone through in the 1880's timeframe? The ELCA says my ggrandfather, Oscar Louis Luschei, was ordained in 1886 but their records are missing from then so they can't tell me the exact date or location. Yet, I found Oscar Louis Luschei on the 1885 Nebraska Census in Pawnee County and he is listed as a minister at that time. My questions are these: 1. Did one perform ministerial duties before they were ordained
18. [LUTH-ROOTS] St. Matthews Evangelical Church [1]
Could someone please tell me where I can find the Church records for the St. Matthews Evangelical Church in Chicago, Illinois. My grandfather and his family attended this Church when he was a child. He was baptized there in 1904. Later St. Matthews became part of St. John United Church of Christ 2242 Moffat St. Chicago. The people at St. John's have not been able to help us locate the records for St. Matthew. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks, Pat

Hi, although I can't answer any of your questions directly have you tried the Pawnee Co. NE web site and mailing list for your research. The site has some excellent resources and if you identify the church that he was the pastor you might find some history that will help you. rfs in omaha, ne On Sun, 29 Jun 2003 18:29:57 EDT Lynngns@aol.com writes: >Hi List, > Does anyone know the actual process a theology student would >have gone >through in the 1880's timeframe? > The ELCA says my ggrandfa

21. RE: [LUTH-ROOTS] St. Matthews Evangelical Church [1]
The St. Matthew Ev. Church at 2108 W. 21st St in Chicago is still an active congregation and serves the Hispanic community. The older church registers are in the LCMS Northern Illinois District office in Hillside. I have looked at them there. However, the original poster said that the St. Matthews in which she was interested was now part of the UCC. 23. Re: [LUTH-ROOTS] (no subject) [1]
The term "evangelical" has nothing to do with whether a church is LCMS or ELCA. Many LCMS churches have that in their name, such as mine, Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church which is LCMS. Hi: The St. Matthews on 21st Street Records are no longer at the Northern Illinois District Office in Hillside. They were there several years ago and I saw them there, but a call back there said they had been transferred to the Concordia Historical Institute in St. Louis. As for the word Evangelical - it appears in the name of many Lutheran Churches (LC-MS, Wisconsin Synod and even some ELCA), however it is ALWAYS coupled with Ev. Lutheran. The original posting was looking for St. Matthew's Evangeli
