Janet,
What Mayflower families are you talking about? Quite a few (if not all) of the wills are already on the Internet, filed by ancestors. Try http://www.mayflowerfamilies.com/wills/wills1.htm for starters.
Good luck,
Mac

The inmate lists for the institution were sometimes part of the census for
the town or county where the institution was located. I have also noticed in
some cases that the individual was enumerated with the family even if he or she
was absent.

I can offer only a couple of negative findings which might help to reduce
the scope of your search. My initial suspicion was that it was in
Rochester, as the births of three of Caleb and Anna's children were
recorded there (Rochester VR 2:13). However, there are no death records in
Rochester VR for any of those
Here is the answer with a link about the AOL rumor:
There's a rumor going around that AOL is going to stop delivering RootsWeb
mailing lists to AOL users.
Not true.
It's a misinterpretation of AOL's dropping newsgroup (usenet) support for
AOL subscribers, started by folks who don't know the difference between
newsgroups and mailing lists.
AOL subscribers will continue to get their RW mailing lists delivered as
always.
I mention it here because there's a fair chance the confused will turn up

Thanks to David Richardson for sharing the great web site with the Massachusetts governmental phone number listings!
I called the Abington Town Clerk this morning, and the Clerk found the birth certificate for James William Coombes for me. It was exciting! It appears James W. never sent in the correction, and the last name on it was spelled as "Coombs," instead of "Coombes" and the birth date is December 22, 1867, which I did not have. The mother is listed as "Elizabeth B." not the "Elizabeth R." that
I have learned that marriage records exist for both Samuel Coombes and Mary F. Coombes. Is there a way to access them free on the Internet?
Thanks in advance for your help,

Hello!
Just found an old letter in storage, dated October 26, 1942. It is signed by a John Coughlan, Town Clerk, of Abington, Massachusetts. It says he had enclosed with this letter a certificate of birth which apparently was that of the ancestor in question, James W. Coombes, though the first and middle names were not included on the record, and that birth certificate is not with this letter.
So this must mean that James W. Coombes was born in Abington, Massachusetts, because he sent to that town for
Natalie,
Thank you so much for your help! I'd been looking all over for this
piece of info, as I figured he must have been institutionalized for mental
illness, since he didn't show up as living at home on the census
records Jennifer so kindly found for me, and in the 1880 one he is listed as
"insane."
Does anyone know whether the Taunton State Hospital has any sort of
records open to the public on patients of his era, and/or how I'd go about
obtaining them?

Some inmates were listed in the census, some historical groups have the old
records in their collections and they may also have the old court records,
especially if the individual was committed and had children needing a guardian.
Greetings,
Belatedly, but none the less sincerely, I wish to thank the individuals who
responded to my posting asking about Plymouth Colony Laws.
Best wishes,

Dear List Members:
Somewhere in either of the following, Rochester, Marion, Mattapoisett or Middleborough, there has to be a cemetery that has a rot iron fence and gate. At the right of this gate, if my memory serves me right, there were rocks marked Cowing. Infant child Warren, then Caleb Cowing & Anna (Richmond) Cowing of Middleborough. In the second row was a John Cowing & Israel Cowing. I visited this cemetery during my teens and made the remark that since these were marked with yellow paint it

Did you know AOL is no longer supporting our mailing lists as of yesterday? I
had seen the notice but did not realize our mailing list is considered a
"newsgroup". Maybe if all AOL members sent a complaint they would change this
policy?
Q: Message: I have heard the rumor that AOL will, sometime in January, no
longer
accept e-mails from newsgroups such as my genealogy newsgroups. Is this
true? If so, how do you suggest I then receive those messages?
Thank you for your help.

It sounds like Janet got a lot of help from several people and that is
great, that is what these lists are for, I believe. What is the logic behind
someone replying directly to her with information and not to the remainder
of the list? I only saw one response to her. Is that a list policy? Did
someone previously get in trouble with maybe 'flooding' the list with the
same subject? Are there some who find it offensive to see emails which have
no interest to them? I'm curious about this. Seems like this shoul
You mentioned inmates on the census, do you mean the census for the hospital
or for their former home?
The reason I ask, my ancestor, who I previously mentioned, is listed on the
1870 census last, his wife is listed as head of household, then the children,
then his "name, lawyer, previously, Lunatic"
He was diagnosed & committed in 1866, and finding his name on the census is
one of the things that makes me think he was in & out of the institution, and
may have been home at the time of the ce
Another avenue would be to contact the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. You are own your own there..sorry ...Check out Google.com type in Taunton State Hospital.....Quite a history.

I have been reading the History and Genealogy of the Carpenters in America.
It mentions that the Carpenter name underwent a change in later generations.
Does anyone know the changed name?
