Barbara, It would be my guess that he would have spent the 4 months in the Brockton City Jail or the Plymouth County Jail. Try writing to the Clerk of Courts in Brockton or contacting the Plymouth County Jail.

John, this sounds like a wonderful project between you and NEHGS, one that

Good afternoon, everyone. :-)
For those of you who don't know me, I'm the county coordinator for Essex
and Middlesex counties. Over the past several years, with the aid of many
people, I've been working on getting the "Tan Book" series of vital records
transcribed and online. I have always said that I would consider the job
done if I got them done or I could get one of the pay sites to make theirs
firee.
The latter is soon to come to pass.
I had a talk with the New England Historical and Geneal
Richard,
NEHGS has 164 books online. There are about another 50 that will need to
be transcribed.
All other databases will still be by subscription. I use NEHGS all the
time. I only use a fraction of the databases but still consider the fee a
bargain.

Her death record shows her age at death as 51 (Scituate VR 2:365) so
that would put her year of birth at about 1793.
I have not been able to place her. The Bates family was especially
large in Hingham, but I cannot find her among the Bates families
there. There were also Bates families in Hanover, but I don't see her
in Hanover VR. There were an Enos and L

Ichabod could not have been born or married in East Bridgewater
because that town did not exist until 1823.
I do not know the date of Ichabo

One time-consuming, but possibly fruitful attack, would be to examine
Plymouth County wills of the period for men named Bates who named a
daughter Lydia Clapp. Since an attack through published vital records
seems to have failed there may be few alternatives, though.
About the only shortcut that I can suggest is that Paul Clapp seems
to have died intestate, and the administration papers in his 1853

Hello,
I have just discovered that grandfather was in Brockton, Massachusetts in
1907, probably working in a shoe factory.
He also spent four months in jail for assault and battery, I wonder if this
would be the city jail or a state prison?? Would there be any records
anywhere?? Since I do not have any photos of grandfather, I would even love a
mug shot!!
Does anyone have any hints as to my next step? Thank you.

It is Bourn. I don't believe the scan is at fault. Based on my use of
those films at NEHGS I think it most likely that the film is grainy.

I believe MARY H. BATES is most likely the dau. of CHRISTOPHER BATES and MARY
POLLY HOWLAND. She was b. Virginia 1813 (all her census records list the
place of birth as Virginia) and yet she is registered as having been born in
Abington in 1813, according to my FTM CD.

Then your CD is incorrect. There is a entry for her under births in
Abington VR, but it is not a record of her birth, just the year of
her birth as given by her Whitman gravestone:

John Slaughter,
I highly commend you for undertaking this project. I have used the tan books fo VR for many years but have frequently had to use the NEHGS book loan program to get them. This will be a valuable resource for all interested in NE genealogy.
In addition to the 164 town records in print, will you be using any other resources? I see NEHGS has the Corbin Collection of VR of Western Mass on 3 CD for sale and the VR of Springfield on CD also. Will you just be doing Mass.? The Barbour collection o
