Dear Cousins,
I came across the following data at the Texas State Archieves. The
following were residents of the Texas Confederate Home in Austin, Texas.
I don't recognize the names but there may be a connection.
JONATHON E. MATTHEWS Born 1839 in Maryland - Occupation Blacksmith
Company F, 4th Louisiana Battalion
Gibson's Brigade, Steward's Division
Admitted to Texas Confederate Home January 31, 1892, Dx. Dropsy

Not bad for just over a year of operation for the mailing list - two new
cousins have joined so the Cousin Count is now 70.
For the new subscribers - please let us know how your family connect to
Hugh and Martha so your "closer" cousins can identify themselves.
Cheers, Bill

Mark, I got some information a few years ago from Trudy Messick in Texas.
She was descended from Jacob III and Rebecca Gilbert. At the time,
information from a Mrs Silas Matthews was on file in the State Archives
stating that the Jacob that married Rebecca Gilbert was Simon's son. I knew
that wasn't possible, but Trudy did help confirm what I already was pretty
certain of. Simon's son Jacob was b. 1806 and married Lurany Johns in
Georgia 12 Sept1833.
i have just sent an email to Trudy , in h
Dear Mary,
James Henderson Matthews was born January 26, 1820. On February 6,
1851, he married Emiline Martin in Cumberland (now Harnett) County, NC. He
died November 27, 1907 in Harnett County, NC and is buried in the Day Family
Cemetery southwest of Angier, NC. A cemetery survey in 1991 gives the death
date on his gravestone as November 28, 1902. I have not personally examined
the grave, so I can't say which death date is correct, although I suspect
the 1907 date is correct since it came from mat
Kenneth,
Your Loderick was the grandson of Loderick Matthews (1794-1855). His
father, Benjamin Rush was the oldest child of Loderick. When Loderick and
Mary Harrell moved to Texas in 1851, Benjamin and his family remained in El
Dorado. Benjamin's name is on a historical marker located at the North
East corner of the town square in El Dorado. He built the square.
Paintings of Loderick and Benjamin Rush hang in the lobby area of the First
Baptist Church of El Dorado. Ak since they were two of the founders

I have long been facinated by the Matthews since years ago my mother in
law told me of Acril who was a farmer in Harnett Co. He went barefoot most of
the time. One day he was crossing a fence and there lay a Copperhead snake.
He promptly stomped the snake to death with his

Co. NC. 1820 census for Johnson Matthews has one male, age 16-26 (Johnson),
one female under 10, and one female, age 16-26. (Miley)
Does anyone know the name of the baby girl who was born in 1820?
A Johnson Matthews is in Houston Co. GA in 1830 . Is there any info on him?
Goodness, a wonderful story about Acril. Where did THAT name come from? My
husband, Dr. Robert D. Matthews, descends from Hugh thusly: Hugh
Matthews-->Joseph Matthews--->Jacob Matthews--->Simon Matthews---->James
Henderson Matthews--->William Parker Matthews---->Dewey Bagley Matthews (son
of William and his second wife, Annie Elizabeth Harton)----->Marshall Dewey

Dear Cousins,
I have found that I have an original letter written to Kate Crowell
Matthews Harleston, my great grandmother, concerning the death of her
brother in 1927. My great grandmother was the daughter of Benjamin Rush
Matthews of El Dorado, Arkansas. The letter indicates that Kate's
brother was buried in Sand Spring, Oklahoma, but I have been unable to
find any record or grave. The letter was mailed from Box 261 Paris,
Kentucky bu a nephew William B. Matthews but I don't have a clue as to
