My wife is Catherine McCleery, originally from Lough Road, Ballymillen, Crossgar, Co. Down. Her father is Thomas Alexander McCleery. He is son of Samuel and Margaret. I wonder is there any connection?

Crossgar is near Killyleagh and across Co. Down from my folks. I do see a mention of Samuel and Margaret (Carson) in Donaghcloney having son James Albert in 1899, but lose track of the family after that. Families move about, but I would not expect this to be your Samuel and Margaret.

There was a mention of the "Jane McCleery" in an article on the Rev. William Steele Dickson.
There were a "large number" of McCLeerys in Portaferryi n the 1700's to 1800's. . One of the merchants named James was an importer and I wondered if the names of the ships might refer to his family.

Most of the early McCleerys are said to have come especially from Antrim. .However Stabane, Donegal, Antrim, Guilford, Lurgan, Warrington, and Dromore are locations in PA probably indicating where their original settlers came from in Ireland. Antrim in PA lists Alexander McCleary and John McCleary in 1786 tax

This article mentions that Portaferry was a place of relative properity, ship building being among the most important of the diverse industries o the town. Between 1800-1840 up to 30 vessels, mostly brigs and schooners were built in this little port. The main bilders were the Conways, McCreelys and Thomas Gelston.
