Hi,
For those of you whose ancestors come from Scotland, does anyone know if
there is a McGowan tartan? I know that McGowans are associated with
Clan McPherson and also with Clan McDonald. How does one know which
clan their ancestors were associated with.
If anyone knows of any web sites where these tartans are displayed, I
would appreciate the URLs. Thanks,
John
Folks,
I have received a number of emails expressing sympathy, etc., which I
sincerely appreciate, but, as yet, no offer to take over the list and
keep it alive and continuing. If someone doesn't take over managing
the List, it will probably cease to exist when I can no longer do the
job.

Hi,
The McPherson tartan is yellow and black. There is a tartan museum in Franklin NC. I don't know if they have a web site or not. Sorry, I don't remember the exact name. All of our research indicates the McGowans came from Clan McPherson. Good Luck

I wonder if your McGowans are from Kirckcudbright County, Scotland as mine are?
I am also looking for any leads on a Henry Madison McGowan. All I know is that he more than likely lived in the late 1800's to the early 1900, or even till after 1920. His daughter was an Annie Isabell McGowan or something like that.

North Carolina McGowan researchers:
For a good number of years now, I have been compiling Census Records on
all spellings of McGowans, county by county, in North Carolina. I would
guess that I have completed about 75% of the transcriptions up to the
1900 Census. If anyone has done any census work on the NC McGowans, I
would also like to incorporate any census work that any of you might
have done, also, if anyone would like to transcribe any of the census
records which I have not yet done, that would be

David,
I am trying to get some info on my MCGOWANs who supposedly came from
Scotland around 1866.
My ggrandfather was Samuel McGowan, born 1846. He emigrated to Maryland and
married Annie Elliot in 1869 in Allegany County, MD.
They had several children--John, Robert, Jenny, Annie, and my grandfather,
Samuel.
I understand that many of my grandfather's brothers, including John, moved
to Pittsburgh and settled there.
Thanks,
Mamie Rudd
