Hi folks,
Does anyone on this list know anything about the distribution area of the
"Herald and Torch Light" newspaper, published in Hagerstown, ca 1890?
I am attempting to locate the Old Town mentioned in the following article
found in the Herald and Torch Light newspaper.
April 3, 1890
An intoxicated colored man early Sunday morning lighted a match to see where
to lie down in James Corder's stable at Old Town, and threw the lighted
match into some straw. The stable burned, with three horses, a lot of
Here's some info on some of Maryland's counties. I was born and live in
Maryland but I still have to refer to this information to keep track of what
happened and when. Frederick County was involved with many other counties
during it's formation and split up. I hope this will be of some help to
you. This is not all of the counties but what was listed in the authors'
books.

Adam (and Peter) Butner were in Frederick County, MD at least 1750 to 1753. No immigration info on them including Ancestry 1500-1900 Immigration Index. Adam showed in Rowan Co, NC in 1753 and Peter missing, temporarily I hope.
Now feel both possibly British soldiers, discharged or deserted. Is there a net, or other, entry to British Rosters for the period.
Thanks for any information.

After reading Wylene A's post about needing late 18th century church records
on his Hefner/Wetzel lines, I thought it would a good idea to make a similar
post on my elusive HAGAN line.
I have previously posted to this list a need for information on Francis
HAGAN who is buried in the St. Johns the Evangelist Roman Catholic cemetery,
Frederick, Maryland. His headstone shows a birth date of June 6, 1763 but
does not show where. He witnessed a marriage in the German Reformed Church
in Frederick in the year 1
Thanks for the information. Figure anything I can learn about the area
and research area beforehand will help me make much better use of my
time. Your e-mail has been kept and put with my Hagerstown file.
Again my appreciation and thanks

Since Frederick and Washington were all the same at one time (to my
understanding) I am posting the following to this list as well as to the
Washington list. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Fellow listers: Sometime back different people were discussing the
places to research in Hagerstown and then also in Baltimore and the
various files different places had for researching. I thought I had
kept all that information, but somehow I have lost it, so am asking for
information from you as to how to search a
Lee,
I'm a professional researcher for hire and as such, I would suggest that you
go to the Western MD Room located in the Washington County Free Library.
They have the best single collection of Frederick and Washington County
publications as well as almost all counties in PA.
I have direct ties to several Bowers families here in Frederick County but
my lines are distinct from the Bowers of Washington County. They may have
Bowers info. that has either been published or researched by other family
members
The FamilyHart Online Database has been updated. We now have over 347,000
linked names online. This is an addition of over 27,000 new names since our
last update. Many of the new names come from Lancaster, Franklin, York, and
Somerset counties in Pennsylvania as well as Garrett, Washington, and Frederick
counties in Maryland. Many of the families recently inputted are from Church of
the Brethren and Mennonite lineages. Please see the database at the url
found below.
Thanks!

I need a bit of help, I an attempting to trace some families back into
Frederick Co., MD. I have found traces of my Hefner back in church records in the
1750's and 60's. I need more, and I also need to fine some records of a Jacob
Wetzel, wonder if he appears in any church records. The time line would be
about the same as the Hefners. (both names Hefner and Wetzel have been spelled
several different ways)
If anyone can help me I would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Wylene A.
