I understand the frustration with the genealogy web sites. To me the bigger
problem is in the accuracy of the information on these sites.
I found I can only use the posted information as "clues" and would never put
these "clues" in my family tree. I would be embarrassed
use such information and give the source as a web site! Pat in Scottsdale
Leah,
Is this the Wm Griffith you are talking about?

I am still looking for the parents of WILLIAM WARD & MARY MILLER. They
were born in Frederick County about 1776. They were married in the
Moravian Church about 1798. WILLIAM was an overseer for NORMAND BRUCE.
Their Children were:
SARAH married JOHN WILLIAM TAYLOR
MARY married FLOYD UNK
ELIJAH
JAMES married. CORDELIA ROSETTA CLARY
ABNER
WILLIAM Jr. married ANNA EASTER
ELIZABETH married GEORGE WILLIAM MCCULLOH
WILLIAM and MARY moved to Allegany County around 1806.
At this time I am not searching for any Dorseys. My g-g-grandfather (Thomas Meredith, 1774-1828) also
lived in the Lisbon area of Upper Anne Arundel County now known as Howard County.

But may I add that quality is highly variable. But then, original legal
sources are often variable too. During the office time of one local
accessor we had two different birth dates in official records for many
young citizens. The accessor thought he did need a record of new births
for when they became "poll tax" citizens many years later. Unfortunately
he often gave the current year as their birth year even when they were born
the previous year or earlier and his information was no more reliable than

On Monday July 22nd 1833, departed Eli Dorsey not far from Freedom Town
being between 80 & 90 years of age.
I would like to know something about this area.

Freedom Dist was in north east Carroll Co. Martenet's map of 1860 shows it

and then Lisbon, Howard Co.

Thank you so much Shirley.
This William who married Sarah Maccubbin is his Grandfather. Capt. William
Griffith, who married Comfort Duvall, one of the early settlers of Frederick
County, was his father, he died, if my memory serves me correctly in or
about 1757. The William I am working on married Sarah ? probably Reynolds.
I do know her name was Sarah, as they moved in 1782 (deed records) to Bath
County (later Allegheny Co.) Va. and she signed off on her portion (dower)
of her husband's estate as Sarah G
I am looking for any Goens in the Frederick area, they would be colored,
negro or mulatto, or passed for white. Lawson Goens, wife Sarah, kids, Charles,
Joseph, William, Stephen, Richard Peyton, Frances G. Roper, etc..They would be
in the area abt. 1870's or 1880's.
Bless it be, Shelley

Prior to writing up some family history for my children, I'm trying one last time to scale this brick wall:
Does anyone know who the parents of George Washington Hoffman were? He was born in Frederick, Frederick Co., MD, on 8 JUL 1821. The fact that his exact birthdate is known suggests that someone, somewhere knows who his parents are. He went to Ohio where he is recorded in 1846 in a marriage to a Martha Durboraw, whose family was from Pennsylvania. (He later remarried twice.) I have had no luck find
Joanne,
Where in Ohio did they live? Did they live in PA before going to OH?

I'm not sure where this topic originated as you seem to be
William, I am researching Griffiths who are half-way kin to the Dorseys. In
the event you run across Capt. William Griffith or his son William who
married Sarah (possibly Reynolds), I would appreciate a shout. Thanks, Leah
