2. [MDALLEGA] Questions about old photographs [1]
I have some old photos from the 1800s that were taken around the Allegany (some Frederick) county area. Many of them appear as if they were in a 'frame' with hand written comments/names on the bottom in the frame area. Others have what appear to be neat commercially printed names on this area at the bottom. I had assumed that this was the name of the photographer, but I have now located one with this same type of commercially printed name which equals the name of a relative that I know was killed during t
3. Re: [MDALLEGA] Sperry [1]
Phyllis~ I wonder if he was the father or uncle of the Mr. SPERRY whom we met at CHAMBERS family functions in the greater Cleveland area. The man I was referring in the 1960s was about 65-70 then. We had the impression he might have led the Frostburg emigration to the Cleveland Steel companies in the 1930/40s. A great story teller. The CHAMBERS lived on Uhl St. until the death of Leo CHAMBERS. However, Joe, Bernard (Barney), John, Bill all moved to mid and northern Ohio. Mary Ellen Chamber

6. [MDALLEGA] MARYLAND ARCHIVES [1]

7. Re: [MDALLEGA] SSDI [1]
Dear Listers; SSDI is one of the most acurate data basis. However, people working for the railroad never paid into the social security system. They paid into the Railroad Retirement Board. My grandfather worked for the RR for forty-five years. When he died my grandmother received survivors benefits. They both are now dead but they both had social security numbers and neither appear in the SSDI. SSDI is based on their payments only. To find the information I needed re: my grandparents I went through

I think it's a good idea! Could you post the address? Not that I have any people in the Frostburg Cemetery yet--but I do occasionally extract obituaries from old papers, and that might be useful too, though generally a little less reliable. Wow! Thanks so much for this! Harry Ravenscroft's wife Beulah was my grandfather's sister, and this obituary is VERY useful to me! I have been trying to trace their daughter Mable (she was adopted, but I don't know what her original family name was). 18. Re: [MDALLEGA] Questions about old photographs [1]
Photography of human subjects did not develop until 1841 when the exposure process was shortened considerably (it had been half an hour to one hour). This, however, was only in France and England where the process was developed. Pioneers in American photography were Matthew Brady and Timothy O'Sullivan who did extensive work in the Civil War. From there, photography took off in this country. Usually, the printed names at the bottom of photographs are those of the photo studio, just as they are today. E

I think I saw something in one of Betty Van Newkirk columns in the Frostburg section of a Thursday's Cumberland Times-News. it may just have been in regards to the changes in businesses on Broadway in Frostburg. I have laying here in front of me a picture of George and Maria Kear taken in the studio of E. E Conrad on Broadway. They were very old in the picture and had been born sometime between 1810 and 1815 and had children from 1838 to 1858. I think Betty said this is the same studio
