My father told me that "the courthouse was burned in the War of 1812", so we didn't know the history of the Harris family. I don't see how this can be. Checking web sites on the war, it never touched Delaware, and only burned the town of Havre de Grace in Maryland. Of course Washington was burned, but those would be national records, and most of the archives had been removed. QUESTION: Is there any truth to the family story? Start with the county assessor's office to get a list of owners. Then check the various censuses and historical society. My ancestors lived in Ridgely, so if you run across FOUNTAIN OR THAWLEY, let me know please. Oh, post the surnames and I'll see if anybody with the Upper Shore Gen. Society is researching them.
