Hello Lisa, Here's the reason why I know next to nothing about my Maryland history or the family history of my Maryland side of the family: My father's side is indeed from Charles and Pr. Georges Co., Md, originally. But my mom was born and raised in Prattville, Alabama. During WWII she was in the U.S.Navy Special Intelligence, or something like that, and stationed in Washington, D.C.. My dad was in the U.S. Army in the War and while home on leave one time he met my mom in Washington, D.C. at a

6. Re: [MDCHARLE-L] WILLIAM MARSHALL brother of FRANCIS WYNE?? [1]
Dear Bill and List, I didn't think that Francis Wyne's widow Elizabeth married 2nd John Hawkins. So I checked my data, and Elizabeth Holland married to Francis Wyne, and she married 2nd Henry Hawkins. See the abstract of the admn. acct. of Francis Wyne below. Henry Hawkins died Bef. May 12, 1699, was the 2nd husband of Elizabeth Holland that died Bef. June 14, 1717 and the father of John Hawkins that married Elizabeth Marshall. John his son was from Henry's first marriage to Eleanor Cole. So I guess my
7. [MDCHARLE-L] Downing, Hitch, Smoot etc. [1]
These are some excellent suggestions. In the first one, this refers to Henry Hawkins Downing's son. (Henry Hawkins Downing III refers to the fact that every generation has had at least one Henry Hawkins.) A lot of their older information is a combination of the research of my distant cousin's wife Teresia and me. In the second one, I have been a subscriber to the Fauquier list long before the Charles Co list. I used to think all my answers were in VA. The inquiries from Walt Cox are from the previousl

Hello William, It is funny that you mention Port Tobacco. I have always been told that my g.g.grandfather, Judge Thom. B. Berry, worked out of Port Tobacco. And I too have always heard that all the old records burned there long ago. Besides the legal field, the judge was also a big farmer/land and slave owner. My grandmother told me some neat historical things such as the fact that he owned hundreds of slaves. She said it was like one big family, that Judge Berry loved those workers and if he so
10. Re: [MDCHARLE-L] Where on earth are all the other descendents of Judge Thomas Baker Berry!!?? [1]
David, here is what they have on Thomas Berry. Not much I'm afraid. The 1776 Census lists the first and surnames and ages and the Hundreds where they lived, except St. Mary's County which does not have a 1776 Census. 12. [MDCHARLE-L] To Cecy&DavidRe:Calverts [1]
Cecy and David, I am surprised to be reading your acknowledgement that Lord Baltimore (whichever one) was "a Calvert". What an understatement! Growing up in Maryland if I didn't learn anything else about my state's history I knew who Lord Baltimore/the Calverts were. THE Calverts. You have a wonderfully rich family history. You seem to indicate you don't know much about them, are you kidding? Of Course, they were Catholic. Did you know St. Mary's Historical City archeologists recently excavated a tomb
13. Re: [MDCHARLE-L] Calvert and Lord Baltimore [1]
Hello, So Lord Baltimore was actually a Mr. Calvert. Isn't that a heck of a note: I find out the Lord Baltimore I am descended from was actually a Calvert (this is all on my dad's side in Maryland). And in my research on my mom's mom's dad's "White" side of the family in South Carolina I read where after my g.g.grandfather John Warren White was killed in the Civil War, his wife, my g.g.grandmother Isabella Jane (McDowell) White remarried a man by the name of James H. Calvert in 1866 and they and

Hello List, I'm new to this list, so I'm hoping someone can help me out. I would like to know who the parents are of MARY ELLEN QUEEN OR ELLEN M. QUEEN that married ca 1851, JOHN C. THOMPSON. I have info on JOHN C. 16. [MDCHARLE-L] Windsor Family [1]
My sister and I are researching our line of Windsor's but we have "hit a brickwall". We have traced our line back to our GG-Grandfather, Lemuel H. Windsor, born 1832 somewhere in Maryland (have not been able to locate his birth record). At this point, we are trying to find Lemuel's exact birthplace and his parents names. A family member told the story that Lemuel's father had built a house in Princess Anne, Somerset Co., MD; and that this house has a brick in it with the name "Windsor" on it. His

19. [MDCHARLE-L] Info on Maj. Wheeler's wife found!! [1]
Hey Y'all, A couple of people have asked me where I got the info about Maj. John Wheeler's wife being actaully the daughter of Rev. Phillip Edelen in England, Rev. Edelen being the father of Richard Edelen who came to Md in 1664. I found it in the mdcharle-L@rootsweb.com archives. it was Norma Thompson who told me that. Here is the link where you can read the old e-mails where I got the info: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/MDCHARLE/2002-03/1015078422. I hope this info is of some h
20. Re: [MDCHARLE-L] MDFamilyHistory [1]
Hello Lisa and Joyce, I am descended from Richard and Elizabeth Banton Edelen, and I too have often wondered about this Lord Pannewell. I tried to find something out on him and have not been able to do so. Not long ago a fellow who is in touch with Croiland Edelen, a known Edelen researcher, said that he did not think that there was any such thing as Lord Pannewell, that it was a name made up way back when. If either of y'all find out anything or proof of his existence, please let me know. Since
21. [MDCHARLE-L] Norma and Hawkins family [1]
What happened to Norma? I was always interested in reading her postings because I must be related to her and Shirley somehow, but I'm still trying to figure that out. I don't know anything about a lot of people they list, but the names sure sound familiar when you look at my family. I'm descended from Henry Hawkins Downing, born 1780. It seems they were part of St. John's parish. He probably had a sister named Elizabeth Keech Downing. His other possible sister married a Simpson. They marry Smoots mul

Hello Shirley, I just sent an e-mail to that Middleton list you mentioned and asked to be put on it as I am descended from them as well. 24. Re: [MDCHARLE-L] WILLIAM MARSHALL brother of FRANCIS WYNE?? [1]
Dear List, I've been on this list since 98, and I think I maybe the only one who has offered to the list, the possibility of what Elinore's maiden name could be. And because it is a "possibility," I'm not going to "not" post it to the list. The sources I cited I felt were good sources. I don't think holding onto "possibilities" and not sharing them with/on the list has gotten us anywhere. I think that statement only scares those of us who are amateur researchers from stepping out and sharing what we

Good morning! On Family Tree Maker CD195 MD Genealogies, there is about 7 pages on the Berry Family of Charles Co, MD. Then there are numerous places in the Smallwood family that it mentions various Berry's. Diane Keiser
