And the National Park Ranger in charge of the museum is our dear friend and
Lois' cousin, Rita Knox. Always wonderful to here Rita tell Canal stories.
Oh, the museum is at the Western Maryland Train Station.

Hi Carol,
I was born and raised in Akron, OH. My Dad was born and raised in Bittinger,
MD. I currently live about 10 mi East of Sacramento, CA about two blocks North
of Hwy 50.
Dad (Ernest Elwood Hetrick) took us to the Bittinger farmhouse on Maynardier
Ridge Rd several times when we were young, and I've made four genealogy trips
back there in recent years (1992, 1996, 2000, and 2003)--got reacquainted with
my first cousins after almost 40 years--Dad's four nieces and two nephews

Delores . . . a sewer and septic system are two different things. You

I was just looking at the area on the Microsoft
Terraserver
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/default.aspx
which shows very detailed topo maps and aerial photos.
It looks like the Backbone Mountain range is the
divider between the Potomac and Monongahela watersheds
and the N. Branch starts east of the ridge up in an
area about 3100 feet in elevation. Town names on the
map nearer than Thomas WV are Kempton and Fairfax. I
know when my great uncle was born there in 1891 the
area was called Fairfax Di
Several members of my MOSSER family are buried there. If I remember correctly it is north of Accident on 219 and you would turn left onto Collier Road. Not too far down the road there is a fork in the road. The fork to the left is a lane into what used to be the Bender farm. The cemetary is on the left not far from the house. It is hard to see from the road because it is on a hill and the road is lower. In 1992 when I was there it was in very bad shape and cows were allowed to roam free over it so man
Baltimore was a thriving town and seaport when the C & O Canal was finished
to Cumberland. It doesn't take much imagination to see barges of material
(and passengers) being shipped from Baltimore to Cumberland on the C & O
Canal. Just load a barge in Baltimore, tow it down the Chesapeake Bay and
up the Potomac River to the canal. It would be more efficient than loading
and unloading wagons to get it to the canal and Interstate 70 wasn't
finished, yet.

Frostburg to Westernport is along George's Creek, Yes. It is about 10
miles. The Georges Creek merges into the Potomac in Westernport. About 1
mile west of Westernport is the small town of Luke, MD and the Paper Mill.
The local's call it the Luke Paper Mill. It was WestVaCo for a long time
and is now Mead or MeadCo.

Shirley, You said Okie Friend was the son of William H. Friend, s.o.

Hi there,
I have been in touch with the nephew (Robert Sharrow Johnston, s/o Minerva
"Minnie" Mae Friend) of James George Friend and Alta Josephine Fazenbaker.
Bob has kindly provided me with some additional information on his family.
.
James George Friend's maternal grandparents are Mary M. Wable and James W.
Kissner.
Mary M. Wable is the d/o Margaret _?_ (1832 of MD) and Noah Wable (1834 of
PA)
James W. Kissner is the s/o Elizabeth _?_ (1812) and Joseph Kissner (1816),
surname spelled KEYSNER in census.
Delores . . . The Canal was finished during the period 1847 (when my
gg-grandparents landed in Baltimore. Her letter of 1854 had the instruction to my
g-grandfather Conrad and his siblings about taking the barge from Baltimore. Very
possible that she wasn't clear where it was located for sure as she instructed
them to see Johannes Fritz (or Frantz) at the pub in Baltimore. Maybe he was
to give them directions to Washington, DC.
I'm frantically searching the 1850 census for Katharina Hedderich (b.

Hoping to make contact with Lavinia who belonged to both of these lists a year ago.
I have information on the Cresap, Thistle, Bruce and Tomlinson connections and found a new cousin who lives in California.
Lost your address with the old computer.

This page gives a lot of information (with dates) about the
building of the canal.
Delores, the Potomac River does flow north from Fairfax
Stone area until it reaches Harper's Ferry (WV). Gee, hope I
am right about that but I am sure someone will correct me if
I am not.
Hi Connie!
I'm still here -- also had a major computer meltdown -- had to replace
my old one, then after only a few months the new one failed. Dell fixed
it for free, but I had to send it to them etc etc. And now, of course,
I'm always nervous...AND I spent July in Raleigh NC with my eldest while
she waited and then produced her 3rd child -- a healthy, beautiful girl,
Hazel Rhianna Holt. I was privileged to be at the birth. What a lot of
work. It was truly awesome. And now she has a 4 yearold,
Google: C and O canal Maryland you should get a bunch of information

Carol,
Thanks for all you've done. We will certainly miss you. I hope someone will
step up to the plate. Webmastering is a skill that I've never learned either.

The C&O ends in Cumberland, but barge traffic was further up river to/from
Westernport not far from Frostburg. Hence the name Western....port.
