Hi,
Is anyone researching the Phillip Ringer family. Phillip married Rebecca Whetstone about 1820-22.
Their children were John born Mar. 02, 1823; Mathilda 1826; Mariah 1830; William Phillip 1831; Susanna May 15, 1832; Joseph 1837 and Lucinda Nov. 22, 1839.
I would like to coorespond with anyone who might know anything about this family.
Thanks, Virginia
I am searching for information on early schools which were located in the Westernport area but in Garrett County.
Can anyone provide information on Firm Rock or Franklin Hill Schools which were above Bloomington? Also Aaron's Run, Gregg and Weir Schools were somewhere in that area.
Hopefully, someone can help.
Alice
What cemeteries are you looking in? It doesn't happen to be near
Shelbysport? I am looking for a Peter Garrahan that died right before 1850
near Shelbysport. Also there may be a Bernard Riley (Reilly, Ryley).
Thanks,
Helen

Pat,
Is it possible that Nicholas married Polly Davis after Sarah Paugh died.
If the judgement paper (1853) is speaking of Sarah Paugh Friend as
"deceased" and it concerns the descendants of Sarah Bray and Nicholas
Paugh. It wouldn't mention a second wife of Nicholas Friend or any
progeny. Sarah (Paugh/Friend) could have had those four children in
8 years and Nicholas Friend could have remarried to have someone
to raise the children. Isn't that possible?

My presumed ancestor, Samuel McKenzie, owned military lots 3369 and 3370.
Since I don't have a plot map that overlays a modern map, I can't tell where
these lots are -- except that I know they are right next to the MD/PA state
line and they are north of Mt. Savage and east of Finzel. Does anyone know
where they would be in relation to the Cranberry Swamp?
Cheers, Ann

Helen,
I live in Friendsville, a couple miles from Selbysport. I wasn't
here in the 1800's. The Friend Family Association has a museum
and genealogical library in Friendsville and that is where I write
from.
I'd love to meet you in Sept.

Alice,
Is the other swamp at Mt. Nebo??? Recall reading my new
Garrett Co. brochure and it said there is a unique bog (I
believe that's what they called it ) at Mt. Nebo and it
is gov't operated, I believe. I found that interesting
because my Emanuel Custer bought land there in 1810 and
moved from Elk Lick, Somerset Co., Pa. to Garrett Co., Md.
Warmest regards,
Carolyn
Ina, the only church at Hoyes now is the Methodist one. Where did they
move the Catholic church which was near the graveyard where Browning was
buried? Delores
I found Cranberry mentioned here. Lots of Garrett Co. names in this WV history.

Joseph N. Miller was brought from Berks County, Pa., when a mere child, by
his mother and aunt, to Somerset County, Pa., his father, Henry Miller,
having died in Berks County. In 1831, he blacksmithed at Nicola's Mill
(then Fike's Mill); afterward, he removed to his present home in Morgan's
Glade. Mr. Miller's eight sons are all good blacksmiths. Ami H.

Cranesville Swamp is ten miles from Terra Alta. It runs parallel with the
Preston/Garrett County line and quite a bit of it is in Garrett County. I
tell people I live in the swamp. Almost do.
But you are right. There is another swamp in Garrett County also owned by
the Nature Conservancy. I can't come up with the name but that's probably
what you were thinking about.

Yes, that would be the Meshach Browning.

Hi: Thanks to Nancy, Linda, Sam, Janice, Margaret and everyone who sent
info on the Beckman and O'Brien families. The amount of information is
overwhelming. What a huge family! Thanks again, Chuck
Hi everyone;
I have a question. I got the following information from someone answering a
post on rootsweb:
> In 1880 census for Accident Garrett Cty, Melchoir Miller, wife Barbara
>and several children also had living with them:
> Elizabeth Smith (servant)
> Michael Smith nephew
> Philip Smith nephew
> Could Elizabeth have been either Melchoir or Barbara's sister?
>She
>is the mother of the nephews and I have found her living with Philip later
>on.
Is anyone searching Elizabeth
Hi Lois M.
Elizabeth Miller (Smith) was Melchoir J. Miller's sister. In the Glades Star they had a story on the family and how Melchoir J.'s father, Phillip, sent him at the age 16 to America to visit Phillip's brother Melchoir Miller. When young Melchoir J. sent favorable word back to his father, Phillip brought the rest of his family including Elizabeth (b. 1838) to America. She is buried in the same cemetery as Melchoir J. and Barbara.

Helen,
Only one Bernard Riley listed in grave book by the DAR, dates don't match your time frame
of 1840-1860.
Bernard Riley 1892-1932 -buried beside Anna, 1893-1945.
Have you checked the Addison, PA area or Bruceton Mills? I am not very familiar with this
area (Addison or Bruceton Mills) but maybe some other Listers can give you an idea.
Weren't the grave's of Shelbysport (Selbysport) moved when the Confluence dam was built?

The only Cranberry Glades I can think of in Garrett County or the area are over at Dolly
Sods, which (I think) is across the WV border.
You can read about that area at this site:

This was where my dad managed to get us lost on a Sunday drive years ago. We started up
the mountain at Jordan Run, WV, (near Moorefield or Petersburg, WV, I can't remember)
ended up on a plateau, full of rocks and three sided trees ( and my mother was

Some of my family that lived near Selbysport, Md. had a friend whose name
was W.H.H. Friend. My families names were James E. Garrahan and Elizabeth
Ann Riley Garrahan.
