I agree, but here's where we meet the gray area between promise and
practice. Unless RootsWeb implements a "reverse gateway" to send
responses to gateway-ed messages back to the messages boards, there will
always be some responses directly to the mailing list. (Even with the
reminder messages, as I often see to gateway responses in the Keating
mailing list
Yes. The Swauger story is well documented. The Swauger graves are behind
the Rec Hall building and their headstones are there now. But this is not
in the former cemetery that I am searching information about. On the old
map I have seen, the cemetery was behind an orchard. I have talked with the
Park and they have the map of which I am speaking but do not know who is
buried there. All the stones are gone at this time.

Kathleen,
That's a good idea. As a reminder to others, in addition to Garret
County's message board at:
Allegany County has a similar message board at:
I don't believe that either the Garrett County or the Allegany County
message boards are gatewayed to their respective lists. Might be
something for the list-
I took a look at a Garrett County Road Map. Savage River Road and New
Germany Road do not intersect; however, there is a small road called
Broadwater Cemetery Road which comes off of Savage River Road.
I would recommend contacting the historical society at 301-334-3226 since
they put together the Graves books.

Thanks for your response. I do have a copy of the Schlosnagle book and have
found that paragraph.
The cemetery I am referring to is close to New Germany Road but is not on or
near Red Hill Road. It is now on state property within the Park, although
not preserved as a cemetery. (Park employees have not been able to provide
any information.) Someone told me it may have belonged to the
Swartzentruber family who apparently lived there prior to the Broadwaters.
I am curious about the Savage River-New Germa
Did I get dropped; can't believe you haven't had any

Might anyone have further information for this family found in the 1900

Dear Todd - I just saw your answer to Carolyn about the Broadwater Cemetery. I had given her the directions but must have garbled them. How ironic - my husband is from Garrett County and I'm from Foxboro. My people, the Newells, were early settlers in Dover. Small world. Doret Newell Jenkins
Keela,
I just sent you a check this morning for the search info. Thank You so
much. I have a question on something. On page 11 of the book by
Raymond I. McRobie there is a reference to Abraham Archibald McRobie.
It also has his wife, Nancy Catherine Fried listed. Next to her name is
an asterisk. Do you know why there is an asterisk? I am hoping there
are more notes in the book that pertain to her. If you can look at
this, I would really appreciate it.
Thank You,
Francine D'Angelo

There are thousands - actually millions of digital books online - right now.
Books that we can use (for free) in our genealogy research - county
histories, city directories, genealogies and more.
To make it easy to see the scope of what is available I have pulled
together over 500 titles - all digital copies - and you may search on
every word in each of these books.
A lot of these are Maryland items - including some for Garrett County

Jo,
Sorry, but I provided all of the information I had. The information came
from The Hetrick Cookbook that was sent to me years ago by my cousins. I will
keep these notes handy and ask my Garrett County cousins next time I call them.
Somewhere I seem to recall the Wilhelm name is William in English. My
grandfather's name of Melchoir is Michael. Maybe if doing a search for the name,
maybe it would be wise to search for the name both ways. I looked in some of my
other family books but didn't

That's why list members should post their replies (to gatewayed messages)
at the message board instead of to the mailing list.
Several of my mailing lists are gatewayed to message boards and the
gatewayed messages contain a link back to the message board as well as a
reminder to list members to post their replies there.

Thank you. I went to the website and viewed the listings. Nelson Wilhelm
was not listed. He may have had a sone there at one time but it does not
appear that there is one now. Or maybe the information I was sent was
incorrect.

Carolyn - to reach the Broadwater Cemetery where Charles and Mary Magdelene Broadwater are buried: going west on Rte. 68, take the Lower New Germany Road exit and follow it to the end at Twin Churches Road. (A right on Twin Churches Road going west 1 1/3 miles will connect with New Germany Road.) Take a left on Westernport Road and travel 3 1/3 miles to Merrill and the Savage River Road. Jo, I have a death date of Jan 16, 1902, the problem is I haven't a clue
where I found that information. I show Nathaniel Casteel died March 31, 1883
in Albright, Preston Co., WV. I checked the WV site for a death certificate
but there is nothing online.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Binaries (including images) can not be posted to the RootsWeb mailing
lists, as most (all?) are text-only.
An alternative is to get a (usually free) account at an image hosting
service (like or or a host of
others...). Upload your picture to the image hosting service, determine
the URL for that particular image, and then post
Someone on the list had answered a query of mine in 2005 that Nelson
Wilhelm was buried at Blocher Cemetery, near Avilton. I looked in the book
Garrett County Graves and did not find him listed. Does anyone know if this
cemetery is posted on the web or if there is any other information about it
being transcribed prior to when the DAR did it for the above book? I would
sure like to find where Nelson Wilhelm is.
Thank you.

I too have Wilhelms in my ancestry . . . I have a Hetrick cousin that lives
in his wife's grandfather Otto's ancestral log house. I will speak to him in
the near future and will ask him if he knows anything about the cemetery and
if he knows anything of Wilhelm's buried there. I have several Hetricks in
Bittinger, Swanton, and New Germany (in their 70's and 80's that have so much
of the history in their memory . . . however, none have computers). I've been
rooting out the Hetrick family histor
