Al,
The published probate index runs from 1776-1890 (Morrow & Morrow). I don't know of anything later - perhaps someone else on the list does. If none is available the address for the Registrar of Wills, Washington County Courthouse, Hagerstown, MD 21740. I would look on the county website to see if you can contact them over the Internet or perhaps some local folks could give you more direction.
If you contact the Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown there is an obit listed in the obituar
I'm wondering if anyone has found any connection between the Canode, Knode,

I would suggest you get Russell's Washington County Maryland Genealogical Research Guide. That will tell you where the record depositories are. You are looking at a fairly narrow window of time and many of the records you may be interested in will be in the Maryland State Archives (Hall of Records) in Annapolis. I can tell you that there are no
records of Wills or Estate Documents for Canode in Morrow & Morrow's index. Morrow & Morrow's marriage license index covers 1799-1860 and there are no Canode entri

At the time some of these family names were first
written, the spelling could have been done by someone
who spelled the way a name sounded. If the person was
of English descent, it was spelled one way, if German
descent, it could have been spelled another way. I
have been wrestling with this predicament since 1983.

Donna,
There isn't an obit listed in Ridenour's Obituary Locator for him. It covers the period 1790-1943. Perhaps someone on the list with all the cemetery books or with that particular one can do a lookup for you. There are no LLOYD entries in Morrow & Morrow's Will and Estate Documents index.

Very Interesting, Thank you. I wonder if this Mathias Kessler was the one
born in Lancaster County, Pa and eventually migrated to Fairfield County
Ohio. His second wife was Eve Gross.
I have added several books to my genealogy wish list. I'd rather have
genealogy stuff for gifts, but unfortunately only other genealogy fans
understand the value of such gifts.

George,
After seeing some of the other versions of Canode being offered via this list, I went back to the Washington Co. Land Indexes. The surname KNODE is among them.I found these:
Henry Knode from John Galloway Lease in 1786
Several involving a Jacob Knode and Conrad Knode from 1787 to 1809
George Knode from Alexander Boteler Deed in 1811
Two involving George and Alexander Grim in 1815

Lawrence,
There is a Powell presence in Washington County in marriage records, in the will index, and in estate distributions, but there is no Thomas. There are about a dozen Powell marriages in neighborning Frederick county in the period of 1778-1810. Ridenour's Obit. Index has around 40 obits if I recall. The earliest is for a Rev. Joseph Powell who died in 1804. I checked in the 1840 census and Thomas is not in Wash Co. There is a Thomas in Antrim Co. PA with 1 male under 5, one male 5-10 and one male

Roger,
The marriage license index doesn't record their marriage so I can't add anything to your data there. They don't show up in the Frederick County index for the 1778-1810 time period either.

Thanks for the info, and now you've raised an interesting question for me. I knew about Christian and Mary being buried at Smithsburg Cemetery. However, I always thought the "two graves, no stones" were theirs, and the info in this book just came from old records. I've actually never even gone to look for the graves because of this assumption. Does this actually mean that there are two OTHER graves besides Christian's and Mary's? Because if that's true, you may be right that this could be Casper and hi
Sandy,
There are seven volumes of Washington County Cemetery Records (Dale Morrow). I've looked at Volumes II, III, and VII, the ones I own and can't find any Shertzers in those volumes. Perhaps someone else on the list can look to see if there are any in other volumes.
I checked Ridenour's Obituary Locator and the only Shertzer obit listed is for J. M. Shertzer who died at age 69 and whose obit is the 12 May 1930 Daily Mail. You can contact the Washington County Free Library to obtain a copy of
