Please remember that dower rights were the rights of a wife/widow simply for being the
wife/widow - sometimes called the widow's third, since she was entitled to one-third of
her hsuband's property if he died - dower rights were not necessarily what the wife had
brought with her as a dower. Prior ownership of the land is not usually an indicator of
the wife's family connection.
Also, many of the German regiment had Pennsylvania origins and connections.

I am looking for information about my great great grandparents. William Davis born 1826, died at Beaver Creek, MD, Washington County April 8, 1855. Married Margaret Ellen Rohrer February 18, 1845. I also would like any information about Margaret born January 1, 1826 in Keedysville, MD. Died November 18, 1911 in Mt. Morris, Ogle County, IL. Margaret had two brothers Harry and Martin, and a sister Amanda that I know of.
I am very new at this so any tips or information will be appreciated.
Thanks

I solved my questions of this nature through real estate transactions in Washington County. Wives had to be questioned separately when property sold and release dower rights. I had a marriage a year before someone died - turned out to be a much younger wife who did not mother any of the children. The first wife released dower rights on property he sold earlier and that allowed me to
determine the first wife's first name at least. So if your Thomas owned property and sold it before leaving, you might be

Dear Judith, The only item I could find was the marriage of Elizabeth Haines
Billingslea to John Lawrence Rafsnider listed in "Monocacy and Catoctin" vol
2 by CE Schildknecht. He gives her dates as 1834-1867 and her father as Dr
James L. Billingslea. He also notes that the Billingsleas were from Shropshire
and were in Carroll Co Md. Hope this helps. Nanette

I've just come across a reference to someone being born in September
1862 on "the homestead" at "Reed, Washington County, MD, almost on the
Mason-Dixon line". Does anyone know where this may have been?

Hello Alice,
Park Hall was patented in 1732 by Williams Parks, It is located along
the top of South Mountain at Gapland.
Keep Triest was patented by John Semple, also known as Semple's Manor.
It was 10,202 acres encompassing almost the entire lower portion of
Washington County down to Harper's Ferry, and north almost to
Keedysville and Sharpsburg. It Included Brownsvilles, and Yarrowsburg

I would suggest going to do your research on a Thursday. The "big three"
(Western Maryland Room at the Wash. Co. Free Library, the Washington County
Courthouse, and the Wash. Co. Historical Society) are all open on that one
day. If you are fortunate enough to find something pertinent in the
library, for example, and need to get to the court house, one can literally
run over there and get the materials you need. Of course, if you are like
me, you'll get wrapped up in what you are researching in one of tho

You didn't say if that is her married name in the Census of 1850 or
if that was her Maiden name
listed with her family? I did not see any Willet /Willett listed in
the Wash Co.,MD up to 1860 indexed.
FWIW: I did see Julia M WILLET married 20 Sep 1855 to James Sigfried

That's right next door & without looking for the Census record you

I'll back out for now.

German surnames were misspelled many ways and their land patents are even worse! You might try playing around with a German dictionary for possible clues, or find a German speaker who could give you some ideas. The only thing I can think of right now is that the German Troste means 'consolation' or 'comfort' - "Keep Comfort" MIGHT be a possibility.
Sandy,Castle Howe built 1849 is the right one. Thomas and Anne Jacques owned
the land between us40/I70 and the Potomac river. We think some of it (Park

Jeremiah Mason. The history book say the two Mason lines from Virginia owned
3000++ ac. at one time in Clear Spring area North and West to Licking Creek.
If you can send be a copy or advise were to find the patent 509a I would be
