4. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] LAING [1]
At one point I thought we should start discussing off list, but then we wouldn't have had so many Laings join in. Toni was a great help with the cousin line-up and was great to be interested in our discussions. That is how we learn here. For a long time, I sat in the background picking up tips and learning. I don't think I would be as far today if I hadn't jumped in and asked questions and had so many people offer advices. Still working on all the bits and pieces in the tree. I can't wait until M
5. [MIDLOTHIAN] Tigh-na-Geat Lothianburn [1]
Hello New to list and hope someone can help me. I have been tracing my family for more than 15 years but made a new discovery last week. My great Uncle JAMES JOHN PICTON DAVIES born India 1888, and an engineer working in Penang in the 1940's was interned by the Japanese during WW2. The Imperial Way museum have a register of prisoners and today they have tracked down his entry. One piece of information that is completely new is that Jim had a wife and she managed to get out of Singapore and get to Scot

9. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] OPR birth records [1]
Good afternoon Liz, There is often a simple explanation for this . Yesterday I was checking the OPR film for births in Sanquar Parish 1850/1854.( At SGS) Amongst the 1850 births were a number of records from 1840/45 Being long enough working at FH research I can remember the days when we had to consult the original documents ( books) at NRH Many pages were badly watermarked./damaged and the Session Clerk then rewrote them when he had time and where he could find space.. I have seen many instances of a p

Hi Liz; Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I have had out of town houseguests who arrived to help my mother celebrate her 90th birthday. It was great. Hi John Stevenson. Hi , excellent explanation, best I have seen yet. In my case there is no baptism record of my gg grandfather b abt 1803. Neither was there of his father b. abt 1759, nor of his three sons b abt 1837(my g grandfather) , 1839 and 1847 and yet three girls born before them all had their baptisms recorded. By the way my g grandfather, gg grandfather and ggg grandfather were all named Robert. Perhaps there was a special tax on individuals named Robert(?) - no just Alberta Canada humour. Ho
14. [MIDLOTHIAN] Re Alexander Ketchin 1871 Census [1]
Hi Toni out there in Ontario Thank you for the 1871 Census and the info on my Alexander which is the first of the ones you listed. It also shows how one could be misled by wrong spellings. The name Owens shows on one certificate as Ovens, which was the name I started out perusing. The 1871 also shows the John Ovans, Mary's brother and no doubt the connection between the two families. I appreciate your time and effort. Have a great day and thanks again. Cheers Janet in a very dry hot New Zealand.

17. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Elizabeth Laing [1]
No, her maiden name is Dempster. The family tree program always uses the maiden names when running reports. She was my grandfather's sister. Robert is acutally her second husband, she lost one in WWI. I have found a birth record for a male, and I cannot confirm as it is past 1906, but his name is Lauchlan John Laing, born in 1925. I am possitive that he is their son, as all my grandfathers were named Lauchlan John. Then I found Robert's death, and the informant was Lauchlan J. Laing, son. So t

Ancestry's transcribers can be a bit creative sometimes; I agree it looks like "Fanny" - it's not even like the way that enumerator writes his Rs. If the dob wasn't quite accurate then FreeBMD has a couple of possibilities for Bernard's birth, given that the district of West Ham is probably within earshot of the Bow bells! Thanks Jean, That gave me lots more information to play with. It is strange to me that David Laing married Elizabeth Stevenson. I have (at a later date) an Elizabeth Stevenson with a sister Jean who married into my Alexander Baptie family (Elizabeth Laing's second husband). I have always wondered how the two met as he was from the Newton area and she was from Berwickshire. Possibility of family connection there.!! gretchen **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Gra
