1. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Death Records / Health in the early 1850's [1]
Hi Theresa Thanks. I did check that. Since posting my original message I have got copies of the birth registrations for the other children. They all say the parents had 2 girls deceased. I had about 6 members of one family all come to Australia on different boats several years apart, so you're right it is worth checking. 5. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Edinburgh 1844 List of Assize [1]
Hi Ron, How tantalising is that. You MAY have thrown up an incident involving my William Auld. If not him then a good excuse to mention him! William Auld born August 1812 in Kirkliston and orphaned by 1814. (no siblings), Found in 1841 in Livingstone, married 1842 in West Calder to Rachel Weir and had eldest child there in 1844, lived Rig, Cramond in 1851, Tranent 1861, Whitburn 1871- 1881, Greenock 1891 and died 1902 in Helensburgh! West Calder and Mid Calder arent far enough apart to say it
6. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] LDS libraries & Ancestry.com [1]
Ancestry.com will still be available through most public libraries. Or, you could break down and subscribe. There is a lot to be said for being able to do research from home at 9:30 p.m. while sitting barefoot in your T-shirt and cutoffs. Otherwise, the FamilySearch.org group has a big volunteer driven project going on to create indexes/extractions of the Salt Lake library's microfilm collection. These will then be made available through the FamilySearch web site. Details are at this link: http://www.fami
7. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Robert DUNCAN - Ecclesmachan [1]
You may have better luck with the SCT-WEST-LOTHIAN list, which covers the old county of Linlithgowshire, as the county of Midlothian does not include Ecclesmachan. Ecclesmachan is a village and a parish of Linlithgowshire now part of West Lothian. Hope this helps. 8. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Newton burials and colliers' loft [1]
Hi, Several listers recently have been interested in Newton burials and the colliers' loft there. One message indicated that burials are only available from 1855 forward. Newton's OPRs contain lair records kept by the kirk for years before (most years) going back to 1730 and perhaps earlier. I have read those from 1730 to 1855 via film on loan from the LDS. As for the loft erected within the church, it is only accessible via an outdoor set of stairs which is in poor condition. For this reason, th
9. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Coalmining [1]
John, I was really referring to formal employment type records that someone can write away for. I originally had a line that things like pay books and other records which name individuals are available (bad cut and paste job by me I'm afraid). You bring up an important point about also trying indirect sources. I've had lots of success with civil and criminal court records, and estate records. It does take patience and luck One thing to remember when using the National Archives of Scotland on

Hi Listers, I have been mystified for a number of years by some baptisms and burials which I found for my GIBSON family line in the "Registers of Edrom Church ". One such entry for the baptism of Anderson Gibson in 1818, son of David Gibson, hind Sheriffhall; another being the burial of a daughter , Alison also in 1818 , who is the daughter of David, hind Sheriffhall. The only Sheriffhall I have ever found since digging these entries out 5 years ago is by Dalkeith. I have two q

Hello Listers, I would like to thank everyone for the info on Peter Hay and Newton. One of your very kind listers has helped me prove that the Peter Hay b in Newton is not the family I am looking for as there were two Peter Hay's both living with different families in the 1851 Census and the one born in Newton is not the one I am looking for. Hi folk, I have a nice mystery to solve and I'd appreciate some help! My little orphan Annie is proving to be a complicated soul. Marion Currie was born 1826 to William Currie and Isabella McLea. Her father died before 1829 when her mother remarried to Mathew lindsay and two children were born George McLea lindsay and Helen Lindsay. It appears that Isabella and matthew both succumbed before 1841 so Marion Currie and George (but not Helen who probably died) were brought up by Isabella's fat
20. [MIDLOTHIAN] Re birth at sea on the " Strathfieldsaye" [1]
Hi to Fionnghal and Mary Thanks for your reply. Like you say the marriage should have been registered here in NZ. It was compulsory after 1860 here, though a number of the old registers never made it to our central repository, and are lost forever. The other problem is that Captain Brown was taken before the courts for failing to supply the necessary vitals the passengers who were short of food and water. There was a big well documented court case, but Brown skipped the country, so maybe the records w

Hi I am looking for any information on William Elgie CORNER. Apparently there may be some connection to my Edmund CORNER b. 29.11.1807 as there is a letter in existence with an elderly relative (which I hope to have a copy of soon) from William Elgie CORNER to his nephew Edward. As William was born 1817 and Edmund 1807 I am hoping they may be brothers or cousins. Edmund married Theresa Byrne 1828 St Cuthbert's Edinburgh and their child were Anne, Edward Craig, Drummond and unknown daughter. Id do

John, I see from one of your emails to the list that you're visiting Newton in June. If there's any help or advice you need, feel free to contact me as I live in Edinburgh. One thing to note about the church is that I've been out there twice and on both ocassions it was closed so I've never seen the miners loft. I don't actually know when it's open, apart from Sunday obviously! There's very few gravestones but a 'lair register' exists from 1855 with a plan of the lairs and burials after 1855 (na

Thank-you to Don, Your recommendation of this site WWW.flashearth.com/?lat=55.936855&lon=-3.061188&z=16.5&r=0&src=msl is wonderful. This is a first for me. I found some very close pictures of the current Howden Park (Farm) and Combfoot, within the village of Mid Calder. So, maybe I couldn't see the 'hoose' numbers, but this site is way better than Google Earth. (Can't compare to the $ or # paid site) Either way, thanks, Ron
