Thank you also - for posting your website www.whatsinaname.net
it looks like a valuable addition to my ever lengthening list of URLs to keep.

Dear list,
I have recently found the death record for my gg grandfather and it describes him as an Army pensioner. I'm wondering if anyone has come across him in either the 1851 or 1861 census in an Army barracks?
I'm looking for William McGINTY / McKINTY (usually described as being born in Ireland and having the occupation of Cartwright).
In 1851 he would have been 25. (His young son William, aged 4, is recorded with 'grandparents' HUTTON at 3 Cumings Close, Canongate along with an Elizabeth WEIR

I've sent a message to this address : kimtara@pacific.net.au

The first son was named after the father's father
The second son was named after the mother's father

The fourth son was named after the father's eldest

What about second families? I saw this somewhere but

Hi Everyone,
My name is Sue Hixon and I have been researching my own and my husbands
family trees for about 6 years now. I am stuck on one branch though and
that is for Valentine Smith. He had a child with a lady named Bridget
Cairnan but I have never found a marriage for them. Their son John Smith
was born 29 jul 1857 in Dundee scotland and is registered under both Smith
and Cairnan. Valentine then married a lady named Mary Jane Kennedy on the 29
of nov 1859 in Dundee Scotland. They had 7 children
Hello everyone,
I've just joined this list in the hope of finding out anything about
St Cuthbert's poorhouse. I've seen the website that features Scottish
poorhouses.
I'm trying to work out if a John Monteath who died there in 1867 is my
ancestor. the death cert gives no clues asto family.
Any suggestions most gratefully received.

Hi folks,
On a visit to Inveresk I took a photo of a gravestone to Patricia Stewart CRAIG who died in 1986 aged 43. Other people on the same stone were John JUDGE, OBE (1905-1990) and Millicent M P JUDGE (1912-1992). This is too recent for me to get birth or death certs - does anyone know the family or if there are any survivors that I could contact? My connection is Millicent's father Alexander STEWART who is my great-uncle.

Rosemary: While I am not sure of this, it seems to me the nameing patern was
repeated for several generations. My own familiy bible as an example has
Alice (the imingrant going thru 3 generations), the same for her husband
John and I see many of the same names all the way to the 5th generation. I
see 4 Johns all alive at the sametime!!

you want further details or a scan.

I've just realised this was before registration so they are extracts
from an Old Parochial Register - probably all on the IGI anyway - but
they do give occupation of father and where they were living.

Places mentioned as to where the were from are Linlithgow and UpHall
Archibald was the son of John Henderson and Elizabeth Thompson and Agnes was the daughter of John Allan & Elizabeth Mc.......

Best Wishes,
Jenny

Hi again Andy
Army pensions can be a bit mysterious.
We have a parallel branch in Aberdeen
where the son is 25 in the 1881 Census
& his occupation is "Chelsea Pensioner".
I know the well-known buildings and
traditions were being created in the
18th century, but we were very surprised
to see this "occupation" for one so young.
I suppose he "did his duty for Queen &
Country" and was reasonably looked after
when invalided out.
Best wishes

Can anyone tell me if there are ORIGINAL registers of St. Cuthberts and High
Church available? I've seen the indexed compilation, register of marriages
for all Edinburgh parishes, on FHL film, but believe there should be more
info in the original record - shouldn't the names of witnesses, called
cautioners in Scotland, be given?
My ancestor Isabella Stephenson/Stevenson married James Pocock in 1839 in
the Relief Church, recorded at St. Cuthberts, and her sister Margaret
married John Wight in 1842 at Hi
My gg grandparents, Alison WALLACE and Robert RYCE (though it says BRYCE on the church record, some of their children have RYCE as a middle name), married on 11 June 1852 in Penicuik. Then there's the 'brick wall' - I can't seem to find their parents, - my ggg grandparents! Does anyone else have either person in their tree or can assist in any other way ?
Thanks

Dear list,
In 1827, in Penninghame Parish Wigtownshire, Charles HUGHES married Mary
McCAY or MACKIE. They moved around the local area for a while, but by
the time they had the 8th of their 9 children in 1846, they had settled
at Challoch in the parish, and there they stayed for about a quarter of
a century (based on 1851 and 1871 censuses).
Then, in the 1881 census, they appeared in Restalrig Rd, South Leith,
both aged 73. While some of their children now lived in Edinburgh

Hello, Listers,
Presently reading an interesting book about Tollcross and surrounds in Edinburgh. It contains people's memories of it years ago and is very enjoyable. It has got me wondering if anyone knows of any books which may have been published about Edinburgh's Southside - St. Leonards, the old Dumbiedykes and the surrounding areas?
Thanks and best wishes,

Hi Andy
Before you leap on the London train, a word of caution.
We went to Kew and searched for various records. The only
one we found eliminated a possible relative [curses].
The reason there were so few hits for us was that a v.
