My gggrandmother was Anna Jane HADDOW daughter of Robert HADDOW and Janette
ORMISTON. Janette's parents were James ORMISTON and Christiana LAMB.
Anna Jane's brother, John, married Jane Colville FLEMING. As far as I know,
that is the only connection. I am told that Robert and Janette were married
in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1820.

Hi Pauline,
Unfortunately I cannot assist you with the Wilson family, but I am
interested in both 'Meek' and 'Calder' families from Whitburn.
Jane MEEK (1804-1873) daughter of David & Agnes (nee DUNLOP) MEEK
David MEEK b. 1773 son of Thomas & Isobel (nee CALDER) MEEK
Agnes DUNLOP b. 1776 dau of Archibald & Jane (nee GENTLEMAN) DUNLOP
Jane GENTLEMAN dau of John & Janet (nee CALDER) GENTLEMAN
Any connection?

Hi Listers,
Have tried to contact the list administrator for permission, but no
luck.So here we go.
As you may know the Westminster gov. has decided to scrap the 6
Scottish Regiments and make a "silly" new Royal Regt of Scotland. Am
trying to get as much signatures as possible on a petition to send to
Downing Street.
We only have until 29Nov to sign up.
This is the link if you wish to see it.

Hi Jennie,
I think yours may not be mine!!!! Although Fife isn't that far from Mearns
(which is near Edinburgh, I think). Mine was an Andrew Pollock Todd b. 1848.
My families too, use mother's or grandmother's maiden name as a second name
. One has occurred numerous times through each generation, to this
day...and so when I see a so and so Turberville SMITH, I immediately assume
there is a connection. Problem is the girls in the various families followed
this practise also and so there are ...Turberville
Follow the link, tons of maps of all of Scotland for many years plus a great 1831 map of Edinburgh. I don't know about Murdock Terrace, but this is a great place for digital maps.

From Canada......I know this is off topic to familiy tree
uff.....but -http://gocanada.about.com/library/nmetric.htm for all you
oldies who still work, (like me) in yards, inches, pounds, ounces, quarts,
gallons, farenheit, etc.
Having worked in industrial supply I can also tell everyone, there are
metric chains.
About 90% of any bearing in the industry is metric in measurement, and is
mainly driven by the European market. Inch size are rare, and often a
special item.

Hello all - I'm new to the list and am researching the STEEL family of
Whitburn, and the TAYLOR and BLACKADDER famillies of Harthill - and would
love to hear from anyone else with an interest in these families. I'm
especially interested in ALEXANDER STEEL, who died 1901 in the Poorhouse in
Linlithgow. Does anyone know where this was, or anything about it - or where
I could find any information about this poorhouse?

yes, we found a handful in the 1881 including
Scottish-born ones, English, Irish and one Indian [she
was a comedian] mostly with the FORTESCUE or FORTESQUE
spellings although i've noticed a range of spelling
variations in England and Wales including FORTISCUE
personally, i don't doubt that the name has come from

appeared in here in hte late 1700s with a sprinkling
of examples appearing on hte east coast, the names
spreading from Edinburgh to Caithness. it
Ian, Thank you for this information. With just the name of the cottage and
the suburb it is not too easy to know if it is the right one or not. It was
a very small lead and as you know any lead must be pursued. I will file it
away for future reference.

Ellie,
Came across this on a Midlothian County list of planning applications
Try a Mapquest search. Go to Maps, use drop down box and choose Great
Britain then for address type in Eskdale Cottages, Lasswade. It will bring
up the map for you.

I will look again at 1861 and 1871 Census
I have a horrible feeling he changed his name somewhere along the line.
I was hoping someone would recognise the name (Theatrical or not)
Thanks anyway Janet
