If it was operational in 1850, you are probably looking for the Grassy Island Lighthouse, which was built in 1849 on the lower Detroit River. The nearest town was Ecorse. It was rebuilt in 1881, and in the 1890s the name was changed to "Grassy Island South Channel Range Front Light." It has since been destroyed.
