I have located an ancestor (age 16), his father, and father's brother
all on a transcription of an 1863 tax list from Polk Co, MO. In an
unlabeled column next to each of their names are the initials "USS."
These initials appear next to most of the men listed on the page. I
assume that this means they were in the Army? I know that the father
and father's brother did indeed serve in the Civil War on the Union
side. My question is about the 16-year-old (b. 1847)...the National
Archives says they have no mi
