Doesn't look like the same name... I assume he's a PHILLIPS since Jessee was one son of.... son of (twice?) Lazarus(Lace?) Phillips was married to Estelle Poppenwell I'm trying to figure out who Estelle was because, to my knowledge, My Popplewell family were the only ones in Camden County and I can't seem to place her

Hello, My husband's greatgrandmother was Margaret Amanda Smart. The family knows that she was of Native American descent. We are from Kansas, but have lived in Osage Beach for the last 20 years. Just yesterday my brother-in-law back in Kansas went to a Smart Reunion. One of the stories he heard was that a man named Smart lived "somewhere near Camdenton when he died. His grave was covered up by the lake that they built. The family decided not to move the body, but let it be covered up by the lake." Thi

Very interesting. That is a ghost town we had not heard of before. Joseph R. ORWIG platted land in this area in 1905: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=37.97083&lon=-92.73250&datum=NAD27&s=50&size=l I suspect the town may have been close to there. Maybe in the NW part of sec. 6. Mike On Sat, 30 Dec 2006, jmills02@webound.com wrote: >Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2006 09:55:41 -0600 >From: "jmills" >Subject: Re: [MOCAMDEN] Joseph R. 15. Re: [MOCAMDEN] Webster [1]
Julie, Would you be related to James Webster who died Feb 2, 1928 in Springfield? A recent publication titled "Remember When" reprinted numerous news articles from 1851 to 1991. There is an article about Jim Webster who lived near Ha Ha Tonka, being shot at his home during an attempted robbery. He is discribed as a well to do farmer who supposedly keep money at his house. Evidently his arm was severly injured, he developed tetanus and subsequently died. The "Remember When" item is available for

Shirley - I doubt that a death record for Sarah will be found unless her grave came be located. Do you know what town they resided? To all who have sent me names - I have added all to a reseaarch list. Should items relating to any of these ancestors be located I will share the info. It would help me to have names, dates and locations which you may have. Thanks! Jan
18. Re: [MOCAMDEN] Research [1]
Hi Mary Lou - The information you were given by the Mo State Archives folks is probably their standard answer for records they don't have for any county. What happened in Camden County is in 1904 the County Court House was distroyed by a fire. I'm still geting the details on this from newspaper reports, etc. If you have birth and death information from the grave marker - that's great and better than some. I am looking at resources other than probate records to establish relationships and develope so
19. [MOCAMDEN] Researching Camden County pre-1900 Surnames [1]
Hello All, In 1904, the Camden County Court House burnt in Linn Creek - long before the Lake of the Ozarks created the need to move the county seat to Camdenton. Obviously, this caused the loss of many records - probate, civil & criminal court, licensing, etc. I am researching to publish a resource book to provide replacement information to genealogists and family historians. To determine the feasibility of this project, I have done a study on Littleberry J. "Jack" ROACH, his wife Francis CRAIN a

21. Re: [MOCAMDEN] "Remember When" available at the Lake Sun Leader [1]
The "Remember When" mentioned in previous postings is a fifty page tabloid publication. It is a reprinting of a number of newspaper articles taken from area newspapers during the period 1851 - 1991. It is an interesting item but of little value to genealogists. There is no index and the articles reprinted illustrate the area's perspective of national historical events. Some local crime reporting is also included. There are no obituaries. Jan Snyder
22. [MOCAMDEN] Question about Stark Rodgers [1]
Hopefully, you can help answer questions in my mind. All the trees I pull up, don't include Henry/David Rodgers/Rogers born 1823-1825 in GA or TN; yet he lives next to John Rodgers and other family members in 1850 Camden MO Census. His first son is named Adam (maybe be Adam David) (the Adam would be honoring his wife's father); but later he had sons: David Rothburn, Francis Marion; Albert I., W.H. (not positive what the name stands for (probably William and the H. may or may not be Henry), and George and

24. Re: [MOCAMDEN] Court House Records [1]
Hello All - I devoted a few hours today to reviewing the Linn Creek newspaper The Reveille 1900 thru 1904. I was primarily looking for information regarding a fire at the Camden County Courthouse. I was incorrectly advised that the fire occurred in 1904. The fire happened January 29, 1902. In summary, the fire started in a "saw dust box which was used as a spittoon" in the county clerk's office. It happened shortly after midnight and continued several hours. The reports state, "The coun
