I have Josephine LEWIS b: 1848, daughter of Richard C. LEWIS
and Elizabeth
'Eliza' GUTHRIE married on Mar 23,1865 to Edward H. RICHARDSON. Can anyone
tell me if this Edward Richardson was the son of Joseph Richardson and
Susannah OVERFIELD that migrated to Barry county in 1837?
>>>>> Edward was living near his mother Susannah in Jasper Co. in the
1850 census.
She was living with the family of the executor of the Joseph's estate,
Elwood
James, whose occupation was clerk of courts. >>>
It has been a long time since I have posted but I have a question that maybe
someone in the group can answer.
The census pages are grouped by townships but I have never been able to
figure out the township boundaries. I have a topographic map that covers
the southern part of Lawrence county. It is divided up into ranges and
townships but the names of the townships don't match the names used by the
census.
Are census townships the same as the townships used in land descriptions?
Thanks in advance.
Hi again Michelle,
I did a little more research on the members of this family because they were Lawrence County pioneers, arriving about 1837 or 1838 depending on the source.
There were seven children who lived to maturity. Your list does not include Achilles, the oldest known son.
"Richard W. W." in Joseph's Barry County will transcription was incorrectly transcribed. The name should have been "Bushrod W. W." Perhaps the transcriber couldn't make out the name and Richard is much more common than Bush
I would like information on the Smith family that resided in Lawrence
County, MO about 1870 (and earlier). The earliest person I've found in my
Smith line is Henry Smith who married Elisabeth Jackson-both from NC.
in the 1870 Lawrence Co., MO census, they were living in Turnback Township,
dwelling 124. Henry is shown as a retired farmer age 65, wife Elisabeth age
52, keeping house. Their children living with them included Walter A,
35-farmer, Thomas, 21, works on farm, Isaac 19, works on farm, and Mart

I haven't found any Jesse's in my line. I do know there was a Loid. I
believe one of my Smith's married an Alto or Alta Colley.

Hi Dan,
The land description townships are not the same as the civil/political townships which are named. Following is some information from Goodspeed's 1888 Lawrence County History section (pp. 43-44) on the boundaries of the civil/political township as found in census records that had been established by that date which may help you. The township, range, and section numbers in the descriptions refer to the land description township map which you have. Originally there were only six townships covering
