Would anyone on the list know anything about Capt John C MCELROY of Co "D" 39th MS Inf. (the Newton Hornets). Would like to know date of death and burial location which I believe may be in Newton Co. Thank you.
Molly
Molly,
Thank you, I do have some that there is no burial place for. I was basically
using the Newton County Cemetery Book and I have been quite stunned to find so
many and I grew up in Newton County, but I think that a lot ot the Newton Co
Graves are near and around the path Sherman took , which, according to the
Union Appeal Centennial Issue, was about 20 - 30 miles wide. It has been almost
as if you saw the Regt, that you almost know if there is nd on any of them.,
and they would not return.

Carolyn,
I sure will when I can get down there. I live in Asheville, NC now but come
to visiit my mother in Meridian serveral times a year.
Thanks
Debra
Try this one - it has no "l" on the htm. It works (just click on it):
http://www.mississippiscv.org/mississippi_history.htm
You will need to know what unit the party you're interested in was a part of.
There is apparently no way to search this site and there appears to be no
index.
Good luck anyway!

Carolyn,
The information I have is from a booklet that my brother-in-law has put
together for the family. We have visited David Jasper Newton Greenlee's
grave twice and know it is there, although hard to find. It is on the very
back row, next to the fence, in the far left-hand side of the cemetery.
DJN Greenlee served in Miss. Militia 30 days in 1862 (Miss. State Troops,
2nd Reg., Inf. Co B, policing deserters, etc.) and served as Pvt. in Capt.
Brown's Co K, of the Confederate Army from Dec., 1864 to Feb
Don't know if you want the names of those whose burial places we cannot
find, but , this is my ggreatgrandfather and I would love to know where he
is buried. I was told by someone that if a soldier died of disease , and the
disease was contagious , he may hve been buried right on the hospital
property where he died.
Please keep me in the loop on this website you mentioned. Thank you for the
McELROY info as well. Molly

I am in the process of sending the Confederate Soldiers in Newton County to a
man in Leland Ms who hopes to put all of this on a web site. I think there a
lot of unknown graves that might be some of them. If anyone has any inf on a
CSA in Newton or elshwere in Ms, please send me the inf.
Carolyn
Oh yes, I would love to find it. I know what you mean, it too makes me want
to find it more. Next time I'm down that way I will have to look. Let me
know if you ever find it.
Thanks for the info.

Thanks, I have the Cemetery all that is indeintified, but when you have time,
and if you find it, I will give you his address and you can send it to him. I
am sure he would like that.
Carolyn
I have been told there is a cemetery at Little Rock, Ms I am intrested in names of white Thames as well as slaves buried there. I would
appreciate if anyone knows anything about this cemetery to share this information with me.
Versie
Debra,
Was he buried in the Conne hatta Confederate Cemetery? Yes I would like all
the inf you have, there is no record of the Graves in that cemetery. The
CSA stone has a point in the top of it. The story is that it was to prevent the
Union Soldiers from sitting on them. We were told that when we went to
Washington on a tour of the Arlington Cemetery.
Thanks , Carolyn
Carolyn,
He and his wife Sarah Callahan McDill are buried at Conehatta Methodist
Church Cemetery. He and his wife have a large upright stone with a fleur-de-lis
type design on all four sides. Where is the Conehatta Confederate Cemetery?
Thomas Alexander McDill entered the war in Hickory, Newton Co., MS. I found
him in MS Camp Guard (Camp of Instruction) Co. A;
Listed in Book MS Confederate Grave Registrations, M-Z by Wiltshire as Thomas
A. McDill 20th MS Inf. b1824 d. 1909 MS Newt. Co. Book in G
