2. [Mar] BULLDOG [1]
Hi Noreen You don't say whether the ship in Question is an HMS or a civilian vessel. My GG Grandfather was captain of HMS Bulldog from December 1860 to July 1862 and I know they spent time in Nassau and returned to Portsmouth via Falmouth in Cornwall. I don't have crew lists so I can't check whether your ancestor was on board or not. I think your first task is to find out whether he was military or not. regards, Clare. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Noreen S." To:

6. [Mar] William Daniels & SS London [1]
Many thanks to Ted, Laraine and Harry for your replies. Having the offical no. means we will be able to go back to the PRO and hopefully find a lot more information on both the boat and GG-Grandfather Daniels I have 2 accounts of the sinking, both mention Rev Draper. 1st :- "The Annual Register" 1866, which is in the library at PRO, this gives an account by Mr Greenhill, the engineer, which details the voyage from a seamans perspective, not much mention of bad weather in the early part of the voyage befo
7. Re: [Mar] HMS Formidable, 1921: still searching! [1]
Hi Kate I can't find any mention of a Formidable in the inter-war years either! I note that your relative was buried at: > LEISTON (ST. MARGARET) CHURCHYARD, Suffolk Looking at my own grandfather's record I note that when he died in 1920 at the age of 40 and from my Mother's very occasional comments that he died as a result of being gassed and living in the trenches for 4 years. The thought, therefore, occurs to me: was Henry RUMSBY actually serving on HMS FORMIDABLE just before he died or was he serv
8. [Mar] Dutch Sailors in the 1700's [1]
Hi to all, Well I have made a breakthrough with my Bruiswater, Brucewater ancestor Mariner that fathered a child in Whitby in 1770. After 2 Long years!! Anyway the name is of Dutch origin. Could any one help me out as to what Dutch Ships would have been in Whitby in 1770 or where I can look for info. Thankyou Kind regards Jennifer in Australia
9. [Mar] Another Palmer [1]
My grandfather, Albert Edward, was born at sea (off the English coast) circa 1869/1871. No birth certificate, no vessel name. He is on 1881 census for Isle of Man. Left there around 1911 for Liverpool. Worked for the Alfred Holt line as able seaman. Went to China, again no vessel names. When too old to go to sea, became nightwatchman for them. Moved back to Isle of Man circa 1945. Died 1948. Any info on Alfred Holt line. Would they have crew lists? Thanks, Margaret
10. Re: [Mar] Mariners families [1]
Hi Jennifer Debbie and Stephen have given you the most likely possibilities, but I think there might be one other, and I'm hoping someone maybe able to dig me out of a hole here :-)) But I seem to remember reading somewhere (and as usual I can't put my finger on the article) that during the period of the Napoleonic Wars if the father of an illegitimate child was not willing or was unable to support the child, rather than take the punishment as meted out by the justices ie usually gaol, he could volunteer
11. [Mar] Columbia Ship Information [1]
I would be so greatly if someone could verify the name of the ship that sailed from Glasgow on 9/25/1913 to the Port Of NY and arrived on 10/05/1913. I believe this ship was named Columbia and was built by the Austro Americana Line or the Anchor Line. I'm not sure which is correct and would like to verify this information. If there is information on the structure of this ship, that would be very helpful also. Seems the Ellis Island site may have a few mix ups of the ships names I am told. I would appreci

Does anybody have a list of Masters names where I might find this one? The ship is the Rhein built 1868 and the voyage is from Bremen to Baltiomre to New York in May 1889. 14. [Mar] German Ships [1]
Good evening all, Could someone please give me some info on whether any German ships would have been in Whitby around 1770. I have been researching my Mariner ancestor Nathanial BRUISEWATER, BREWSWATER, BREWSWHATTER, BRUCEWATER etc. without success, only a child b. in Whitby 1770 and another child that died in Whitby in 1774, but who was not born there, There is no such name anywhere except for his direct line. someone on another list suggested that it could be a german name and the above spellings ar
15. [Mar] Seatime [1]
The V-shaped gantries secured to the bows of merchant ships during the war were in fact means of destroying mines. Wires were secured to the point of the V and trailed out port and starboard cutters and paravanes (bouys) were in turn secured to the end of the wires .When the cables of the mines were cut they would float to the surface and and be destroyed by the gunners on bourd. Torpedo-nets were nets which were hung over the side at the end of long derricks to catch or explode torped
16. [Mar] Duncan Haws [1]
I notice that Duncan Haws is retiring and selling his reference library in one lot for #8000! More than I can afford, but a good investment for any serious ship researcher. His 'Merchant Fleets' series of books which totalled 39 volumes and cover many of the world's major shipping lines are a valuable reference resource and his work will be greatly missed. Ted

21. [Mar] H.M.S.Revenge [1]
Can anyone help me please. My great grandfather John Franklin was a musician in the band at H.M.S.Revenge (shore based?) in Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland, in 1874. On his marriage certificate to his wife Anne Brierly, her father George Brierly is given as Captain of Jackall as his rank or profession. Can anyone tell me anything about H.M.S.Revenge and Jackall. I can't find either of them in any naval records, nor can I find any mention of John Franklin or George Brierly. Regards Pauline pauline.bagsha
