1. [Mar] Ship "Brigand" [1]
Hi Listers, My ancestor David WEMYSS, born 1806 in Fife, SCT was "Commander of the ship Brigand", on 25 Jan 1840. He was a resident of Calcutta at the time he made his last Will just 3 days before. The Will was submitted to the Supreme Court at Fort William accompanied by an affidavit certifying his death, so I assume this to have been at sea? Perhaps confirmed by the fact that there is no burial recorded in Bengal archives? Could anyone give me any information about the ship and/or the career of the ma
2. [Mar] Ship 'ALDINGA' [1]
Howdy All, I am seeking information on the ship 'ALDINGA' which obviously plied her trade in the Australian waters early in the 1920's. I believe that my late father James (Jas) BROUGHTON may have been on the crew list. Any information greatly appreciated. Regards, Jim in Queensland, Aust.

5. RE: [Mar] Half Pay Time? [1]
Hello Rod, WHITTAKER, Frederic G born 15 May 1845. Started as Asst. Engineer 2nd Class in 1865. The 42 days at "Half Pay Time" occurred after he had been promoted to 1st Class Engineer (July 1871 - December 1872. This is a little confusing as three entries representing about 7.5 years are all listed under one heading "From Full Pay Ledger" as opposed to the name of a ship (as the rest of the entries on the document are). The document from which I got this is PRO Reference ADM 196/24, a copy of the Service
6. Re: [Mar] When was US Merchant Marines started [1]
Hello Larry I can tell you that the first American built steam tanker was "Standard" and she was built in 1886 at Chester Pennsylvannia for the Standard Oil Co. So the American Merchant Marine were certainly active at that time. and I would assume they went back to the time of independence. regards Martin Navarro ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Sunday, August 27, 2000 7:29 AM Subject: [Mar] When was US Merchant Marines started > I am trying to t

8. [Mar] FLORA TEMPLE [1]
It is'nt generally understood that emigration was not just a European phenomenon, in the mid- to late-19th century: thousands of Chinese labourers left their homeland to sail to the USA to find work, usually in the construction of railways. GGGPa's scrapbook gives a graphic illustration of what they could expect in this cutting of 1859. Does anybody know the ship's owner ? ........................................ 13. Re: [Mar] ALAUGERMITE [1]
Hi Dave, I have been given a photocopy of my greats diary, where he is talking about how he cannot do much work as he was worrying about his son who was on the Elingamite, so this info you have given me to-day would be a confirmation that I`ve got the correct ship, as he was going to take the buggy into the major town and cable the ship-office. At least now I know where to search for his crew records/agreements. He lived, by the way,to end up on a merchant ship on the "Other side" during WW1 outbreak an

16. Greek Merchant Marines [1]
Listers, My ancestor came to the U.S.A. from Silivri, Istanbul, Turkey in 1917 (age about 24 yrs.). He was a greek by the name of Nicholas Theodore. (a.k.a. Theodoros/Theodorou). He was a "seaman" all of his life. First with the Greek Merchant Marines and later with the U.S. Merchant Seamen, U.S. Merchant Marines. 17. Re: [Mar] Ships of U.S. Convoy PQ-17 WW2 [1]
Bill, I have no specific answers to your questions, but the JOHN WITHERSPOON was a Liberty ship. On 6th Jul.1942 she was torpedoed and sunk by the U.255 in the Kara Sea at position 70.30N 52.00E while on voyage Reykjavik to Murmansk with a cargo of ammunition and tanks. This was the controversial convoy, where the escort left after reports that heavy German units were in the area. There have been several books on this convoy. Convoy is to Scatter by Captain J. Broome RN. published 1972 by Kimber The Des

20. [Mar] ACCRINGTON [1]
This ship made a number of voyages to Australia, with emigrants, and it is to be hoped that the steward on those trips was not the same one referred to in this newspaper clipping, dated March 11th, 1860, taken from GGGPa's scrapbook : (Previously posted to The Ships List) ACCRINGTON : Owner unknown, of Liverpool. The ship was on passage from Liverpool to Calcutta with soldiers and soldiers wives and children. The conduct of the Captain appears to have rendered him unpopular and circumstantial eviden

25. Re: [Mar] Thames Lighters. [1]
Iain asked about Lighters. The only figure I can find Iain is in Frank Carr's 'Sailing Barges, and he gives the figure as 39 tons for a lighter in 1756, but I note that the barge Esterel, belonging to EJ&w Goldsmith weighing in at 67 tons was sold to T Walker of Northfleet as a wrecking lighter in the early 1900's.
