1. Frederick Cornwall VELLA [1]
Hi Listers, Can anyone help with more information on an ancestor, Frederick Cornwall VELLA. I found reference to him on the National Archives website. His date of birth was 10th May 1904 and if I have interpreted the information correctly he was awarded the Atlantic Star Medal and ribbon and the War Medal (for service during WW2 ?) There was a number under his name: 1018911. I don't know if he was in the Merchant Navy or the Royal Navy. I would appreciate any help. Regards, Dawn in Sweden --

4. US built escort carrier, 1944 [1]
A friend of mine, who was evacuated to Canada during the War (see my posting "DUCHESS OF BEDFORD"), was offered the option in 1944 of either waiting for the re-introduction of liner crossings of the Atlantic, or going home immediately aboard an RN escort carrier, escorting a homeward-bound convoy. He chose the latter, of course, and sailed on her from NY in mid July 1944. For the purposes of the voyage, he and the dozen other boys who accompanied him were rated as temporary midshipmen. He can't remember t

2 I think SLINGING - attaching slings to the brickettes 3 CAREENING means heeling. They used to clean the bottoms of sailing ships by careening them - laying on one beam to clean the other 4 Wind from dead ahead - on the nose - I call it a dead noser 6 Possibly trying to avoid some tax in the next financial year? - she was British 8 Burlapping may have been to protect the stanchions from the cargo or vice versa, or both. 9 SEIZINGS are bindings on ropes, etc - twine tightly rapped and tied around a rope's
8. Radio Officers in WWII [1]
My father was a radio officer with the Merchant Navy during WWII. I am presently trying to transcribe his diary from 1941-42. He has just signed off the Empire Bronze and (working for the Marconi Co.) was asked to "volunteer" to be the sole radio operator on a small ship (692 gross t.) which would be taking supplies to Turkey then on to the Red Sea area. It is difficult to make out the name of the two sister ships involved. They left Glasgow in December 1941 in convoy. The names look like "Silvinis" and "Ca

10. Brig LINDEMAN [1]
I would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions related to my continuing search for a brig called the Lindeman from the 1790s and/or details related to a mutiny that resulted in the death of the captain, Thomas Walker, and possibly a subsequent trial of the mutineers. Known details, skimpy though they are, were outlined in my posting of 15 January 2005. I am unaccustomed to research in the maritime subject area and, therefore, am receptive to whatever ideas can be offered. I already have unsuccessfully queri
11. Researching Kew (BT 164) [1]
Just finished rereading the captioned informative and efficient treatise vital to my visit to Kew. I have been searching for an illusive grandfather, Michael O'Brien. Michael was born cicra, 1847.His marriage certificate in 1872 describes his occupation as sailor. I have reviewed over 40 LDS films of ACLs and other sources and have not found a hide nor hair of him.Apparently, on 7th August,1874 according to the New Ross ,Wexford harbourmaster' s log he gave up a maritime career to become an assistant pilot
12. HMS ASIA 1859? [1]
My supposed gt grandfathers Royal Navy service record includes 'ASIA March 1859' Does anyone know if this was a ship or the place? One interpretation would be that he was on repair steam ship Volcano in Asia, specifically, China for the 1859 campaign. Thanks all Dick Fowler -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 14. Thrunscoe, Zylpha, North Briton [1]
The good people of the MRA have hit a bit of a jackpot in the search for my wayward Grandfather. They have found him on three crew lists, which are winging their way here as I write. I have the details of the first one, thanks to the kindness of John Stevenson, but I would be grateful if anyone can give me an idea of what trades the others are likely to have been engaged in. They are: Thrunscoe O.N. 106653 in 1898. Zylpha O.N. 102873 in 1898. The latter crew list has his previous ship as North Briton O.
15. Re:LOCH TAY official no. 60468 [1]
The vessel in question is indeed Aitken, Lilburn & Co's Loch Tay. She was built in 1869 and stayed in company service between the UK and Australia until 1909. She was then hulked in Australian waters and survived as a hulk at Adelaide until broken up in the late 1950s. Malcolm Cooper

18. Finding Info on a Ship [1]
Hi, My Swiss ancestors came to America on the ship "Confederation". Arrived at the wharf's of Manhattan, New York on 23 April 1855. Departed from LeHavre, France. I am seeking information on this ship, such as type of ship, capt.'s name, etc., and also a picture or print of the ship, if possible. I think the ship is part of the Marine Union Line. I have searched high and low for info on this ship and you are my last hope. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know the costs. thanks, robe

20. Duchess of Bedford now HMS Bulwark [1]
Hugh I have a sketch in a 1930's ship modelling magazine which shows the vessel that was used to partly clear the wreck. It is described as a former gunboat and is fitted with a large steam crane and grab. My own suspicion, given the shape of the hull is that it is in fact a redundant WWI monitor. I do not have a web site to publish on but would be glad to scan the sketch and send it to you (also to anyone else who is interested). I think that it is probably out of copyright by now and the mag

22. Re: [Mar] DUCHESS OF BEDFORD [1]
I must admit I find this a fascinating story. Although there are a number of replies stating the action between the Duchess of Bedford and a U-Boat took place and that a U-Boat was sunk but no one has mentioned which U-Boat was sunk. I have looked at numerous references on this subject and the closest I can get is that on the morning of the 8 August 1942 U704, which had been part of Wolf-Pack 'Wolf' and had joined 'Steinbrinck' in an attempt to intercept the Sydney to Liverpool convoy SC94, missed the stea

I apologise for having let myself drift into dangerous waters and thereby offended anyone. In future I shall confine myself in safe harbours. By the way, I was chatting to an acquaintance today and he had heard from a local diver that the mud at the bottom of Queenboro Creek, just off Deadmans's Island, is full of bits from HMS Bulwark. Does anyone know of any official report on any 'clear up' operation? Hugh Gibbon
