Dear George, A Google search under " Ross rifle" produces many relevant cites as to the weapon itself and its fallibilities... That extant weapons would be un-mothballed for this target use is entirely probable.... It would be presumed on issue that sufficient leisure would be to hand to permit of the vagaries of the weapon not to constitute any real problem! 4. Blockage of River Plate 1864 [0.975943]
I tried The Ships-L List with this one but was advised to try the Mariners list as well. Apparently a ship tried to run a blockade of the River Plate in 1864 There were casualties and prisoners taken from this ship in October 1864. The prisoners were held for many years before being released - they included children. One of the casualties was Charles Alfred CUTLER, a mechanical engineer His widow, Elizabeth, was taken prisoner together with her baby daughter who had been born in Buenos Aires, 2nd October 1

Good evening Tony, Glasgow & Londonderry Steam Packet Co. ( Managers T. Cameron & Co., Glasgow.) Lewis Mclellan formed a shipping company in 1814 to trade around the Firth of Clyde . 10. Killed at sea 1865 [0.975943]
Is there anyone on this list who can help me find out a little more about the incident listed below? I went to the National Archives at Kew yesterday and found the excellent records of the Royal Greenwich Hospital School which lists the boys who were admitted with information about their parents. (ADM 161) The father of the boy I was looking for was a Robert COLLINS, Boatswain 2nd Class, who was reported to have died in 1865 "Killed on wreck of Armenia, African Mail packet on passage to Rattlesnake" leaving

I know this is not what Dmitry asked for, but I thought it might be of interest. In the 'Cambrian' newspaper, Swansea dated 25th December 1874 seven sailors from a Russian ship called the 'YPTAAST' appeared in Swansea Police Court. They were charged by Herman REINWALL with desertion, that is failing to rejoin their ship. They were Waldemar JOHNSON, Karl Oscar GROWLAND, Kristian SILANDER, David GROWLAND, Franz Heinrich LUNDELL, Gustave TYYR and John Frederick TYYR. The newspaper reported that they wer

17. Re: [Mar] What's a Round house [0.975943]
Well - I suppose it makes sense when you think about it, Andrew. But you have to think laterally! Like "One - two - six - HEAVE". Barry PS - when I first read that verse about "this bloody round house", I assumed that "round house" was a euphemism for "s**t house". That's the kind of schoolboy I was. 22. Captured English sailors in 19th Century [0.975943]
Does anyone have any experience with tracing captured English merchant sailors circa 1810. I am trying to track some sailors captured in the Pacific by the Spanish authorities. Locations were Peru and Mexico (Nueva Espana). I am very interested in following the Spanish paper trail. Surely someone else has done this before me. thanks Chris Maxworthy

25. James M Pollitt [0.975943]
I am trying to find anything I can about my ggfather James Milroy Pollitt and I don't know where to start. My mum remembers him when she was a child and she is coming up to 80 this year so her memories are vague. James was born in 1858 in Maryport, Cumberland. He was not a sailor at 19 as I have him being a draper's driver at that time. According to the 1901 census, he was still employed as a driver with a family living at 54 Stitt Street, Liverpool. Somewhere in-between he became a sailor or had some
