My husband's family legend is that his great-great-grandfather was a full-blooded Indian. His name was Thomas Perkins, born 1834, died 1881; lived for many years in Dover, NH. His parents are James Perkins, b. 1801 Rochester, NH, and Susan Down(e)s, b. abt. 1805, Rochester, NH. If the family story is true, James and Susan would have to be Indians. I haven't been able to find birth records on any of these people; have only found the death record of Thomas. Does anyone know of any Native families by the
Sorry-Our family's Indian connection is through a McGee that married Mary
Ottertail, a Cherokee. There is Indian heritage on my Grandmother's side
(maiden name Balentine), and I believe it might be Creek, but so far, I
can't find any information to prove that.

Our family says that my ggrandfather, Alfred Woodward and his brother,
Lewis/Louis were the sons of "General Woodward and a Creek (or Choctaw)
woman." They are both listed on the 1870 census as "Mulatto." They were born
in Alabama during the time the General lived there. They went to Louisiana
the same year the General did.
