1. [NativeAmericanDelmarva] Re: Re: "Anatolian bump" [1]
People from all over have various bumps and ridges on the back of their heads. I've searched the physical anthropology literature and asked physical anthropologists about the "Anatolian bump" as an indicator of Turkish ancestry. No one has ever heard of it and it's not in the scientific literature. Now the burden of proof is on Melungeon mythologists to come up with some evidence and logical explanation for their hypothesis. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen. Identity myths are more r
2. [NativeAmericanDelmarva] FYI: Native American Studies [1]
Osiyo- Here is a link for "The Certificate Program in Native American Indian Studies" at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. I post these links to the list because genealogy involves more than just researching "the names". Often times "the American Indian history" and "the where" is just as important as "the who" in genealogy studies. Why are you saying that I am being Hostile, I am only stating the Truth, there is no such thing as an Indian Maiden. What is Hostile about that ??? Hostile...Is saying that one's Family member is an Indian Maiden, And that is an Insult to all Native American's, And Being a Vet has nothing to do with it. I am not trying to be Rude, I am only stating the True Fact's. No one that is a True American Indian would ever say that, If one want's to say that about a Family Member that's Fine
4. Re: [NativeAmericanDelmarva] Language links... [1]
Osiyo~ Thanks for the info. about the Osage Tribe names. It can certainly make it difficult to trace a family lineage - for outsiders. One of my Native Sister Veterans (Pine Ridge Sioux) told me that they hyphenate their surnames with the mother's and the father's to bring honor to the mother's family. 7. [NativeAmericanDelmarva] Language links... [1]
Osiyo~ Here are a few Native Language links that I thought may help with genealogy searches. There are 'several reasons' for name designations or name changes. Sometimes names were changed by a direct translation, from Native to English - then sometimes names were changed because they were misspelled, often times names indicate specific regions... 8. RE: [NativeAmericanDelmarva] name [1]
I guess this is a dumb question, but are names from all the old and/or disbanded Siouan-speaking Monacan Nation tribes on the Monacan Rolls that you mentioned? The families I talked to claimed to be from the disbanded Nahyssan who I understand were once a part of the Monacan Nation although not necessarily the Monacan tribe. This gets confusing to me about whether the Monacan tribe proper and the other-named tribes (like Saponi or Nahyssan) are considered Monacan or not. Thanks! Best wishes, Pat Elder "

There is only one Monacan Indian Roll and you will not find it on the internet as I have explained. We can not and will not publish the Monacan Indian Rolls due to the waiting Federalization of the Monacan Tribe along with the other 7 tribes of Virginia. If you don't believe me try the Monacan Indian head quarters its self. and you will be told the same thing. This is not just a roll for genealogy this Tribal roll is the life blood of its people.its not like the Chereokee rolls that have been published for

I have been looking for Taylor Steele who married Mary Merrith, unk.date, father of Charles Steele,b.1880in Sweet Springs,VA.,married Collonial Griffith,b.1883,in Roncefort,W.VA.If anyone knows of these names,I would appreciate hearing.I've wondered if Collonial may have been Indian. There are strong rumors that there was Indian background, but am told Charles and Collonial wouldn't speak of it to her children. It is a beautiful, but unusual name.We are hoping she is an that's the reason we can't find records for

Thomas, As a list member for over a year now, I have been content to remain silent. Now, I feel as though I must take a stand and agree with Morning Star. I am formally trained in Osage Beginning Stories and Osage Traditions, as well as, Western Myths and Western Traditions. I do not find the Western ways any more relaible than the Indian. 2/6/2001 Hi Thomas F Brown: I have read some of the Melungeon information because my family ended up in the Cumberland Gap during the late 1700's and 1800's. And the information became much more interesting when I came across the "anatolian bump" information. I am not agreeing that it exists nor am I disagreeing. But, I am a 61 yr old grandmother who has a great curiosity about the origins, not only of my family, but of all of us everywhere. Now, I do have a "bump" on the back of my head at the locatio

Dear Runningfast Why are you so hostile at someone for trying to search. The person's words may not be the words you would chose but it does not mean their heart is not sincere. Do you know that there is a Cherokee prophecy that says we will all come home with white faces Jenny

Brenda, Emancipation records are usually found in the county deed books. I found one in a Charles Co., MD deed book where a group of men got together and freed a slave woman because she made anti-French remarks at a social event that they were attending. Also most free blacks had certificates of freedom that should be recorded in the county deed books or in a separate register. The freedom certificates often stated whether an individual was born free or was emancipated. Jerry Hynson has abstracted freedom
