I have just returned from Ocracoke and viewed the cemetery from outside the fence which had a sign "No trespassing". Althought I was so tempted to go in and record the tombstone inscriptions, I didn't.

I'd contact the National Park Service since the island is owned by the federal government. And you might want to contact the US Coast Guard since they have a ceremony scheduled for May 12. BTW, on Okracoke is the British Cemetery where the men of the HMS Bedfordshire were buried. This is a must visit for anyone visitine Okracoke. sOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT IN SUCH A SITUATION. You can take a picture sometimes QUICKER than writting down the info, take a digital (for a quick referance on the quality of picture you took) or a 35mm and take a CLOSE shot of each, then transcribe after developing, if some didnt take go back. I've done this in such situations, compiling and distributing historical data means MORE to me than a sign, and when I have been approached in such instances and you explain WHY you are doing such I have NEVER b
