Hi: I am looking for descendents of Hymerick Perry who was a farmer in Bertie
County in the 1700's. I hope to contact someone with knowledge of his family.
Thanks, Trudy Swain
For you newcomers you may not realize that all the email on the Ruffin list
has been archived and is available on the web at the following site.
The O'Quinn issue has been discussed and you may want to check it out.
I just checked and thruout the years there are 12 posts that deal with the
name.
Go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
Type Ruffin.....That will get you to the Ruffin list archives...then type
O'Quinn or any other name, location, topic that you would like to look at.
Harry,
I have just finished putting the Mewborn Collection by Ima Mewborn on a
database. At the same time am working with a group trying to straighten out
the early Bryan family. The Bryans intermarried with the Whitmels and
Grays. The Mewborns with the Gray family. Suspect the Mewborns, Hardys,
and Grays all moved to Dobbs Co at the same time , but we have not been
able to prove the Gray family of Dobbs is the same as the Gray family of
Bertie. Due to a lack of records in Dobbs, now Lenoir, we can't even
I have a bit to add in regard to the Mary Pugh-James Luton union. May 4, 1754
this same James Luton md Mary Hopkins nee King, the daughter of Solomon & Amy
King. I can document only 2 of the children listed for James as belonging to
Mary King Hopkins. They are James & Solomon. After James Jr reached
adulthood he sued Mary Luton and her then husband ....Smith. He states that
property which was given to Solomon & James, his grandchildren, by Solomon
King was in the possession of Mary & ...Smith. They ap

Hi Cathy.
Society Parish was the name given to the Southern Shore of Albemarle
County in 1704, comprising Bertie Precinct, by the Anglican Church -
Church of England - or as we now call it, the Episcopal Church.
The "Society Parish Church" was considered to be the St. Thomas Church
near Merry Hill, established in 1730 on a 50 acre tract given by Sir
Nathaniel Duckenfield.
The only extant records (very few) are in the book on "St. Thomas
Episcopal Church" in Windsor done by Cullen Dunstan and myself a few
Hi.
Horse Swamp is just on the left of Hoggard Mill - Greens Crossroad
behind the firetower about about a half mile up the Wakelon Road.
White Oak Pocosin is on the road from Windsor to Askewville and
eventually drains into Cashie Swamp. "Pocosin" = Indian for "Swamp on a
hill."
Morrattock River = Roanoke River, Morratock is old Indian name.
Meherrin River in Hertford County.
You know, it's hard to believe that there are so many PERRY in and around Bertie,
Edgecomb, and Perquimanns Counties in the 1730-1820 time frame and I never hear of
any of them and then when one comes up like Hymerick, I've never heard of him
either.
Has anyone heard of the line Israel, Josiah (m Millicent Freeman and Eliz. Twine),
James (m. Charity(Sarah) Parker, or Jeremiah. Or has anyone info on Charity
Parker PERRY daughter (maybe) of King PARKER.
All information appreciated.

> . . .Hi:
Thanks to all who replied so quickly. As you may have guessed I am trying to
track how the name "Giles" was passed down to me. Giles Luke Driver and
Martha Early were my grandmother Houston's great-grandparents. Again, as far
as I can tell, they were married in Bertie County in 1830. That's as far as
I've gotten on my line of Drivers. There is also a rumor that Martha Early
may have been Native American. I'd like to nail that down, too.
I know the name goes back further than Giles Luke Driver. I'm
Dear Group,
Thank you to those who answered my question about the naming of John RUFFIN
alias O'QUIN.
Cathy
I suspect that John Ruffin alias OQuin was not Martha Ruffin's natural son.
Perhaps he was illigimate and his father wished to acknowledge him. This
may be the reason that he was expected to pay "proclamation money" and the
other sons were not. It sounds as if he was well aware of this son, but was
not sure he wished to inherit from the father. Apparently his name was
O'Quinn which was either
I'm looking for info on Sarah Barnes, who married Peter Parker abt 1762
in NC. They died in Hopkins County, KY, where they had moved with their
children - Mildred, Elizabeth, Thomas, Richard, Elisha, Bethany,
Benjamin, Esther, Wiley, and Barnes. I've seen different parents listed
for both Sarah Barnes and Peter Parker. Does anyone know for sure who
their parents were? Is there documentation out there somewhere? I come
through Bethany Parker. Would love info on the other children's
descendants, and wil

Buckleberry Pocosin is indeed southwest of Merry Hill and almost due east of
Windsor, on the south side of Highway 17. The Fleetwoods were prominent in the
early days of Bertie. I descend from a Maybee Cake, who's mother was Mary
Fleetwood. There is quite a lot on the Bertie Fleetwoods in the "Nicholas Cobb
Descendants" book by Joe H. Cobb.

Received this today from a friend. Just a reminder as to why it's so

Does anyone have any information on Washington Griffin who left for
Louisiana from Bertie Co. in the 1840s? He was born around 1803 and

Rights to buy X amount of land, or get it for substantially reduced amounts,
was the incentive to populate the colonies. The amounts of $'s and land per
headright varied from colony to colony, but these "headright's" were very
important. Interestingly, a person earned a headright each time he/she
traveled into the colony, so trips back and forth to England earned
additional headrights. (Some earned heardrights when traveling between
colonies as well.) These headrights were also bought and sold and saved
