W.H. Rhodes in his book "Caxton's Book" devotes a chapter to Woodville
entitled "The Deserted Schoolhouse".
Mr. Rhodes returns to Woodville to visit his old school house which is now
deserted and he recalls a boyhood story of "playing war" involving Billy
Goats as military mounts.
This description of a Muster Day in Woodville I thought you'd all enjoy.
"Colonel Averitt, a brave soldier in the war of 1812, retired from the army
at the termination of the hostilities, and settled upon a farm adjoining

One group of military records that we don't have anything on our Bertie

I understand that there were some men from Bertie County involved in this.
Records are on microfilm according to State. I've not seen these

microfilm from North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee which was
published in 1995. (Sorry, but I don't have the author)

We're so grateful for this beginning of a listing for Roxobel-Kelford
Cemetery. We realize that this is a relatively new cemetery, but we would
still like to create a listing that might help some people locate their
family.
Bertie County NC Cemetery - Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery (partial)
Faye Wallace wallace1@schoollink.net
Visited in 1997
Located about two miles from Roxobel and about a mile from Kelford.
It is also a good size cemetary, still in use, easily
accessible to the public.
(Partial Listing)
Horace Peele sent in this marvelous listing of Peele people to complete the
WPA Survey that I just typed up. I was so delighted, and then as I'm
copying it all over to the cemetery, and starting to load it, I noticed
that this is one of the ones that Lynn had transcribed!
Won't it be interesting for those two to come to blows over this!!
Probably Horace took his material from Lynn's posting....who knows.
I'm going to pretend complete ignorance about this....after all I dutifully
removed her cemetery and
Great....here's another school to work on!!

Getting the Ashburns of 18th Century and early 19th Century Bertie Co NC is
a difficult task. I will not be working on them much longer because they

historical presentation on the murder of George W. Ashburn, Columbus, GA,
1868. This was quite a sensation in 1868 and is historically significant.
