Hi Lea,
There is a map of Hayesville, Clay Co. NC at this location and it shows
where the library,
court house, and county offices are located.
http://www.hlrp.com/location.htm A great
restaurant for lunch (or anytime) is the Country Cottage Restaurant (or the
Deli next door
to the restaurant) located a little ways out of town on the left heading
towards Hiawassee,
GA on Hwy 69.

I am finally going to have the opportunity to come to Clay Co. for some much
needed research. Could someone please tell me where the county courthouse is
located, and if they have birth, death and marriage certificates there? Also,
what about wills and land deeds? Thanks for the information.
Lea Holland
Lea,
The courthouse is in the square in the middle of Hayesville, but the deed
office where they keep most of the records is accross the street from the
courthouse. The office is next to an antique store owned by Wayne Phillips.
There might be a giant rocking chair in front of Wayne's store so you
shouldn't miss it.
The deed office is where the birth, marriage, death, land, and some military
records are kept. The ladies who work in the office are friendly and very
helpful. I live in Michigan, but make it t

Hayesville is quite small and the courthouse is in the center of downtown.
You can't miss it.

Death certificates, marriages and deeds are quite
easy to access. Not sure that birth certificates
are open to the public or not. Court house staff
has always been helpful to me.

There is a Curtis Ledford and a William Ledford both listed with the 58th
Regiment, NC Infantry. You can find their muster rolls on Film Number M230
Roll 23. On the muster rolls, you might find if he was wounded, sent to a
hospital, prison, died, and the last date they have the soldier listed. I
don't know if these are your ancestors, but it is worth searching.

Lea,
Hayesville is the county seat of Clay County. It is a small town the
courthouse is located on the town square. The vital and land records are
located in the Register of Deeds office. This office is not in the
courthouse, it is on the square just across the street from the door of the
courthouse in a grey brick front building.

Yeah, Cutworm is still there. He and his buddies don't sit out on the
sidewalk in the winter time but he is still there. If you enjoy history,
and most genealogist do, drop in and look around his store. It is an
experience!

Does anyone have any information on William R. Ledford who was born
approximately in 1845 to Curtis E. Ledford and Susan Baker Ledford. In the 1850
census he is listed as 5 years old and in 1860 he is listed as 15 years old, but
there is no further information about him in the 1860 census in Clay Co. North
Carolina, or for that matter no where in North Carolina. Does anyone have any
information on William R. Ledford. Did he join the confederacy or the union
army and get killed? I have looked for a long
Who were parents of Curtis Columbus Ledford?
His wife was a Ledford also. Alice Ann Ledford. Who were her parents?

Can anyone shed any light on Obie Simpson Ledford's wife? I have Social
Security information that shows Anna's father as William Perry and her mother as
Vina Adaline Worley. She is shown on various censuses listed as Anna Worley. I
can not find a wedding record showing the marriage of William Perry and Vina
Adaline Worley. I have found a marriage of Vina Adaline Worley and a J. D.
Helton in 1893 in Clay Co. North Carolina. I also believe Vina Adaline Worley
mother's name was also Vina Adaline Worley an
