Does anyone know if the William Elliott (b. 1699) who lived and died in
Augusta, VA, had a will? If so, who were his children mentioned?

I need a birth certificate lookup and unfortunately need it in a hurry. A
relative of mine went for her marriage license. She was told she has to
obtain her father's birth certificate and identify his "real" name. As a young
man, he dropped part of his middle name and lived by the name he chose. I
have written and emailed the Mecklenburg Co office which handles birth
certificates, but have had no response. Unfortunately, she needs it quickly in order
to not have to postpone her wedding.
Hi folks,
Being a descendant of ole John C., I was amused at this article that appeared
in the Charleston Post and Courier this am..April 12, 2005.
"OLD RUMOR
Calhoun's history as 19th-century defender of slavery, hater of taxes and The
Great Nullifier of federal laws is well-known.
A Friend of GMLc (name of article) from Camden, however, recently leaked to
us the Old Rumor about John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln. Maybe it's
well-known, too, but we'd never heard of it.
Lincoln's early years have had
The following is some references I have for the Elliott families of Mecklenburg Co., NC. Maybe some where down the line this will help sort out some of the Elliott family connections for researchers, but does not include all the connections.
Ray's research ("The Mecklenburg Signers") provides the following.
Robert Elliott, a son of Robert, was a trader of Chester Co., PA, and had the following brothers: Solomon, John, Joseph, and Andrew, as well as sisters, Margaret Ellis, Martha Boggs, Sarah McLellan
I am trying to determine the background of the William Elliott who settled
in the present Ft. Mill area of Lancaster Co., SC, in the early/mid 1700's and
who was associated with the Spratts and the Catawba Indians. So, can anyone
tell me in which NC/SC county I should look to find the most information on
him (possibly his background)?

Joyanne,
The will of Robert McKnight dated 1818, shows his daughter, Catherine, married Joseph Nicholson (Will Bk. B, p. 95). Do you have the land records for Charlotte and the Sugar Creek property?

Jim,
Is your George Elliott the same as George Elliott, who settled on Eight Mile
Shoal Creek in early Anson Co., NC.

Hi Paul,
It's often difficult to make a family connection or I.D. with just a name
(no age, spouse, children, time frame or death date?) for the ancestor, due
to the usually "same name" problem which exist within most records even
within the same geographic vicinity. There was an Elliott family who came
to Mecklenburg Co., NC as early settlers, some of whom were connected to the
Spratt family. There is at least one William Elliott who lived and died in
Mecklenburg Co. I am not an Elliott research

I'm sorry, you're right, Ft. Mill is in York County. Thanks for bringing
this error to my attention.

There was one Elliott family in northern Mecklenburg County originating
with George Elliott and his wife, Jane (Jeannete) Barry Elliott who settled
around 1760. They had a son William who was born around 1775. His brother,
Hugh, also had a son named William born around 1808. About every generation
of that clan had a William. I am rather familiar with this group but suspect
that your Elliotts were a little south of that.
There was another group of Elliotts who where rather contemperaneous

Who was his father in Augusta? William? Andrew? Robert? James?

Jim,
Dr. Robert Ramsey (Carolina Cradle) shows that your George Elliot probably came to North Carolina from Queens County, Maryland and provides research references for the MD records.
