I have checked ancestry.com and the closest I can come to this is a S.M. West from South Carolina. There were several SM West's that were POW's but none stated their State affiliation. I did find, however, that he survived the war. In 1870 he is listed in the New Hanover County, Wilmington Township Census. Judy, Thanks, I did get you changed over a couple of days ago.
