Does anyone have access to the DAR book: Roster of Soldiers from NC in the

Looking for Carrie Stephens, daughter of John A. Stephens and his wife Sarah
A.V. Stephens. Carrie was married to William WILBON. She died in Baltimore
MD in 1880. Her obituary in the Baltimore newspaper includes this note:
"Raleigh, Durham, and Hilsboro NC papers please copy." Because of this I
think she may have been from NC originally. Any information appreciated.
Would especially like to know where Carrie and William were married. Thanks.

A friend of mine on the excellent MARHST-L (Maritime History) list posted a
series of informative items about privateering during the War of 1812. Since
many of us descend from families who might have engaged in such activites,
but don't generally know where to find Maritime records , I thought it might be
helpful to share these posts with you. Frank has given his kind permission .
The later posts mention both ship names and people names. Hope you
recognize someone...or, just enjoy a well written historical
The next quarterly (usually) revision of the Old Pendleton District
Database cd will be mailed on 15 March 2001. All outstanding requests will
be filled at that time.
The OPD Database is a project of the Old Pendleton District Chapter/SCGS
and is based on a single gedcom containing over 300,000 names of those who
lived in the OPD (+ancestors+descendants).
The OPD was comprised of the area now occupied by the 3 westernmost
counties of SC. Adjacent counties are GA and NC in addition to SC.

WARNING: Let this get your attention.
Early 1700 & 1800s, Old Pa. wagon roads due south cris-crossed through the
state of VA. from upper New England carrying thousands of migrants. Great
road split about present day Roanoke. One road continued down into TN.
toward GA. and other road due south into Rowan County, NC. toward SC. The
road from Roanoke to Rowan County was the most heavily traveled road in the
country. It was both a southerly route and a westward route from eastern NC

Consider this a stupid question if you must, but I was wondering why
so many early settlers chose land that was considered swamp land?
Was it because water was close?
And for that matter, how did the early settlers get their water to use in meal
preparation and drinking? Did they drill wells back then or just haul it from
the creek?

Hi all. I would like to correspond with anyone researching the BUTRAM's/BERTRAM's

Also, I live only about an hour away from Ft. Wayne IN library. They are the
second largest Genealogy Library in the country. Second only to Salt Lake
City. I go often. They have tons and tons of material for research which
includes all parts of the country. They have all census on microfilm for
the entire country, and thousands of other ma

There can be no doubt, then, that the Pagan festival at the winter

the Babylonian Messiah. The consideration of the next great festival in the
Popish calendar gives the very strongest confirmation to what has now been
said. That
festival, called Lady-day, is celebrated at Rome on the

New Inlet, now the area around Kitty Hawk. Bounded on the South by Oregon Inlet.
Mentioned by John Lawson in 1700. Appears on the Moll Map, 1729. Cow Island and
Duggs Island, also show on the Moll map, are now joined with and are part of Bodie
