3. [NEWGEN] Re US REGISTRATIONS [1]
Roy Re...US birth registration ... It differs from state to state..some states have birth records back father than other ones...some states did not have to have birth records till the late 1800's...for all of my gggrandparents children I found 1 record of birth in Fall River, Mass for 1869 that required births to be registered....1 child in Ohio early 1870's that his birth is recorded and as for the other 5 children their info was found in a search done by the Diocese of Pittsburg Pennsylvania for the res
4. [NEWGEN] Internet [1]
I use the internet mostly for locating cousins & other family members although I have used some information from sources that are out there as I am not able to get to that state or county to search.Roy, you are right that we still have to dig through the dust and the dirt to hunt for any clues, but the internet has put cousins in my life that would never have happened, had it not been for the internet. I have had alot of help from the pros and am grateful for that. I still have alot to learn and I am still

7. Re: [NEWGEN] Family myths - sometimes they are (almost) true! [1]
Roy, Read your story about your ancestor who, according to family stories, was a drummer in a regiment at the Battle of Waterloo with great interest. I, too, have a similar story in my family about my great grandfather. He was supposed to have been a drummer in Napoleon's army. As they were retreating through Vilna, Poland, he went "over the hill". He was suposedly taken in by monks in a monestary and taught the occupation of forestry. His name was TABER, which does not fit in Russia/Poland. As I und

9. [NEWGEN] British Subject in India [1]
Attention Mr. Stockdill: Perhaps you could give me some idea of what direction to take in finding out more about this situation: My husband's uncle was in the U.S. Army (I have their records) after the Spanish-American War, was in the Philippines, married a Filipino lady, had several children. In March 1920 he emigrated to British Cochin, Madras, South India, working for the Tata Oil Co.. In May 1921 he married Bertha Pitter, a British subject, in British Cochin; I realize that being labeled 'British su
10. Re: [NEWGEN] Traffic [1]
Bill, I am replying to all, to express my thoughts. This is a busy time of year for most of us, I am sure. People doing fall chores, going on fall vacations, etc., etc. This may be part of the problem?? As you well know, I don't contribute that much to the list. I guess it is too easy to just sit back and read what the others submit. My mailing lists consists of a lot of surname lists. So - I guess we members need to think about just what we do want. Do we want this list to continue? Then it is up

14. [NEWGEN] Salem Witch Trials .. More info [1]
In January of 1692, the daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris of Salem Village became ill. When they failed to improve, the village doctor, William Griggs, diagnosed bewitchment and put into motion a "witch hysteria" that would ultimately result in the death by hanging of nineteen men and women. In addition one man was pressed (crushed) to death for refusing trial; seventeen others died in prison, and the lives of many were irrevocably changed. Many factors lead to the witch hysteria of Salem. There
15. [NEWGEN] postings [1]
I, too, have been only a "lurker" for a long time now, as a full-time job with rigid weekday hours has kept me from much of the research I was enjoying doing. However, what I greatly miss from this list is the "good stories" (I even have a folder with many of them that I have kept) and the personal caring that used to the posted to this list. I realize that this is a genealogy list, but I miss the sense of family that used to be so pervasive here. Sharon

18. [NEWGEN] Postings [1]
COULD I, as a newcomer to the list but a very longtime genealogist, make a suggestion as to what is wrong here? Of course, some of you may think there isn't anything wrong (!) and perhaps I am not putting this too well, but in view of Dr Bill's worries about the lack of traffic and exhortations to us for more postings I feel there must be. I am on about eight lists altogether - admittedly all UK-based, except this one - and on all of those there is a huge amount of traffic, with lively and vigorous (someti
19. [NEWGEN] WebSite [1]
New music, new NTT winner give a listen. On the NTT song this week you have to listen carefully to the xylophone playing the melody, the 'background" has captured the foreground and makes listening a bit of a chore. Dr. Bill (Bill@Dr-Fox.Com) .

21. Re: [NEWGEN] Am I related to a witch [1]
I dont know when you joined the list Roy, but have enjoyed your postings and this last tale is fascinating! Do keep us posted on your witch hunt. It is a shocker to find one related to infamous people on your family lines, and when they show up as direct ancestors we have to learn to accept the fact that every family has them, even if they arent talking about it. A couple of years ago, I found that one of my direct ancestors could very well be the first woman hanged at the Plymouth colony, Alice Bishop. (Up

Bill Cribbs wrote..... >>I've been trying to find the history and origins of the CRIBBS family in the UK. I think they are Scottish but have not found proof. Any info, Roy?>> I HAVE consulted one of the definitive books of surnames - A Dictionary of English Surnames by P H Reaney & R M Wilson - and it does not suggest a Scottish origin for the name CRIBBS (the title of the book is a bit misleading, BTW, it should be "British Surnames"). Here is what it says..... CRIBB, CRIBBES: Hugo Osbert Cribbe 11
