John KING born: Greenspond, NF 1901-1984(St. John's) married to
Lilly EASTMAN from Dark Cove, Gambo, NF.
He worked as a constable in St. John's for most of his life. Got accepted
at the age of 16. He was big and looked a lot older than he was. Worked on
a fishing boat as a young lad trying to support his family. His father died
young. Took fishing trips to the Labrador coast. Also involved somehow in

My GGrandfather JOHN MERCER was from Bay Roberts. I heard that he may have
changed to Catholic when he married his wife ROSEANNA BRENNAN. I also heard
that a lot of settlers in Bay Roberts came from the above listed places in
England.
In order to do a search on John, I need to pick a religion. Does anyone
know which religion was most noted with the settlers to Bay Roberts from
these areas? One possibility I was going to choose is United.
Thanks,

Hi Patsy,

You are right about talking to our elders. I recently called my 91 year old
Aunt and she was so happy that Walter's daughter thought about her. I sent
her a family sheet and her careworker filled out as much information as
could be found from the family bible. I also sent her a picture I had found
of her daughter and one of her mommy. I plan to call her every few weeks
and every little detail that she may remember helps and I enjoy every new
story and the sound of her voice.

I was thinking for a while that Oderin Island had a name change but then
Bill showed me that it is still around. I am wondering why my new
up-to-date map that I got from NF tourism does not have it listed.
It is there in the bay up above the ankle but just below the back of the
knee area of the NF boot in southern Newfoundland. Betwen Placentia (town)
and the boot is the whole bay area with lots of little places.
Does anyone know why it is not listed on a regular map?

Thanks for responding to my Aunt Rose Story. I am really glad you enjoyed
it and I loved sharing it. I will share more. I just wish I was a faster
typest. I told Aunt Rose that I would make sure I would record all her
stories when she had said (it was all gone now, lost) and expressed regret
that she did not know more about her mother's and father's background and
stories.

I hope someone can help regarding finding an efficient way to share family
details.
People in my family have at least 8-10 kids each with a few mountains of
facts. I find that I have to fax a person my family sheets because I do not
have an efficient way of sharing them on the internet. I tried to make a
file from my "Family Tree Maker" in word and foreward it to someone but it
just does not look right.
Is it ok for me to foreward messages that I have sent people to this sight
or is that considered
I just received a few more family details from my cousin William EMBERLEY
in Buchans, NF. I thought I would resend this.

My sister in Badger was good enough to list the MERCER names in the
phonebook for Springdale so I could do a 20 letter mailout.
I would like to do a mailing for the Mercer's in Bay Roberts.
Is there a better way to get the phone listings for an area rather than
hoping to get a nice operator? Is there anything like this on the internet?
Also, I have been dealing with many Williams(Bills) in my family from my
Emberley and Mercer side. I was wondering what is the chance that the only
William in Halifax
MERCER family did a lot of fishing on Ming's Island in late 1800's and
early 1900's. I found Ming's Bight on the map but there was a nearby island
called Horse Islands. Does anyone know if that is the Ming's Island of that
time? Also, what does Bight stand for as I have seen this used in several
place names?
I want to clear point of what 'cutthroat' means. My Aunt's job at 10 years

I am wondering how I can get a look at the 1857 census for Conche and also
names of people living there in 1867 on ward. I am also wondering about
listings of members in the community in Oderin at the same time.
I was reading about Oderin and Conche and see all these references in the
encyclopedia and wonder where they are getting all the info etc.
I cannot go to the NF Archives for a long time.
Thanks for any help.

Does anyone know if there is any census information on line about the above
towns? I went through every little listing and did not see the names

Thanks Phil. I still wonder how my Grandmother managed to be born in
Placentia in April 1880 way down south but the rest of her siblings were
born all the way up in Conche. It is quite a distance by boat. So, I now
wonder if they returned to the Placentia area not just to fish but to spend
some time in the land of my GGrandfather Joseph Emberley (bOderin 1858).

Thanks for all the help I have received from our geneology team in
responding to my questions.
I do not have a connection in the family tree to England, Ireland or
Scotland yet but I would like to ask our members from overseas if they
could check to see which towns that the Mercers seem to live over there.
Jersy (Channel Islands) (1787) was mentioned as one place Mercer's came
from in the NF book of names. There is also mention of a Jacob from Poole,
Dorset who settled in Bay Roberts 1810.

Hi,
I thought I was one of the few people who are having lots of trouble with
variations on names. First, I though my GGrandmother was RALPH from Conche
(north NF near St. Anthony). Then I thought I was on to something because
my Dad seemed to remember his mother saying a name that sounded like(ROUF)
like a sound a dog makes between Roof and Rough. I also found a listing of
a George ROFF in the NF book of names in Conche around 1850. Recently in NF

My Aunt, who will be 92 in August, told me a little about her childhood in
Little Bay St. Patricks and Beachy Cove. The Mercer family moved from
Little Bay St. Patricks to Beachy Cove around 1916 because of the booming
Herring Fishery.
Her job was "CutThroat" at the age of 10. She would go to the fish stage
with her father and sister and she would cut the heads of the fish with an
extremely sharp knife.
Her job was also to hook up the dogsled team so that her father, William
