Hi Colleen, The son John Roberts born in 1829 could fall into the date category that I'm looking for. Is it possible that you have some family history on this fellow? Even if he is not the one I am looking for perhaps I can narrow down the many possibilities I already have on a John Roberts. The one I am looking for married an Ellen Maddox nee Foley in about 1880 and fathered my Grandfather Clarence in October, 1880, reportedly in St. Johns. We know Clarence was a Roman Catholic and are supposing that John

16. [NF-ROOTS] RE: Margarine in Newfoundland [0.976207]
Muriel and listers, Margarine was manufactured by the NFLD Butter Company at St. John's, NF. In the early 1900's it was packaged into 10 and 22 lb round wood tubs. When the contents was used the twenty two lb tub was used as a scrubbing bucket and toting water from the well. The ten lb tub was the ideal size for berry picking. The interior of the tub was coated with wax- I recall that it made for fine chewing gum - not too much flavour but it did no harm as I lived to tell the tale. And so, the old wooden

Thanks to those who responded so quickly to my posting. Unfortunately I only know that that Lavinia Simmons (a great aunt) born 1873 married A. Pelley and they lived in Lisbon Falls Maine, and had at least one daughter Lillian who married Freelan (?) Goddard in Maine. The address that was found in an address book was no good so I'm stumped. The marriages were found in the Maine State Archives, but they don't have the same amount of records online that Newfoundland does. My Simmons side has no further inform

Funny about those memories. My first trip was in 1948 and I was four years old. I have many memories of that trip and as was said they are like pictures in a scrap book but each is fresh and vivid. I have been going back as long as I can remember and each memory of the place and the people are fresh and vivid. I get to go back every summer and some times more than once in a year ( going on Saturday for the New Year) and I always relish my visits "home". Thanks for reminding me of my own trip down memory la
