Many people have expressed interest in this fall's Exploring Your Jersey
Roots lecture series and in purchasing a copy of the syllabus. The
information below is for those of you who won't be able to attend the
lectures in person...
The syllabus for the GSNJ / NJSA "Exploring Your Jersey Roots II" lecture

Joan,
My ancestors arrived from Ireland around 1851. They attended St Peter's which is now only a school - their records are in the care of St. Bridget's.
I have not been able to locate their graves either. My only hope is that they are in Jersey City Cemetary which isn't kept up very well. Otherwise I have no idea where to look.

Could someone see if there is an obit for Elizabeth SCRANTON, who was listed
in the 1920 census, at age 80 years? She was born 1839/1840 in Sussex Co.,
NJ, the daughter of James BROSS and Mary VANDERHOOF. She first married a Robert
POTTER (no other info known by me) and then W. C. SCRANTON of Scranton, PA.
I have only been able to find Elizabeth in the 1920 census. But have found
deeds that she has deeded property to her niece, Christiana Jane CASE. In the
1920 census listing, Elizabeth resided

Back in February, I reported that the Feds had seized the birth records
from Hudson County in connection with an unexplained
investigation. Records can still be obtained from Trenton.
There really wasn't any follow-up info on what was going on, though I
really didn't go crazy trying to find out and then, last evening, on
the evening news, there was a two sentence blurb to the effect that
"The U.S. Department of State has stopped accepting passport applications

Microfilm of the Jersey Journal is available in the Jersey City and Newark
public libraries, at least, according to the libraries. The Star-Ledger is also
available in Newark. I don't know if they lend out microfilm to associated
libraries, but it might be worth asking at your local library to see if they
will.

I have "GUIDE TO FAMILY HISTORY SOURCES IN THE NJ STATE ARCHIVES" which
is published by the State. On page 16 is a description of NJ Sate census
records. The first sentence says "New Jersey state censuses were taken
in the middle of each decade, from 1855 to 1915." If you know of a 1925
census I and I'm sure others would like to know.

Yes this church still exists. The Mormons have microfilmed the older
Baptisms and marriages. Don't bother with the church they are not very
responsive- no staff. You should be able to order them at a local FHC.

Does anyone on the list have any knowledge of a Charles Schittig (or Schuttig
or Schettig) who was a councilman in West New York? His mother's obituary
from 1916 mentions Charles as "councilman-elect." The last reference I have to
him was on the 1930 census when he was living in Fort Lee, Bergen Cty.
Also, his father was a volunteer fireman in West New York for a number of
years. Can anyone suggest how I might get some information on him?
Any suggestions will be welcome.
Many thanks.
